Challenger start/ignition problem
I have a problem with starting my Challenger 1970.
When i turn the key the starter doesn't do anything. Then i tried to shortcut the starter relay with a screwdriver and then the starter will work but i don't have a spark.
Is it the ignition switch? or can it be something else?
Thanks,
Ton

I would first replace the starter relay, the problem is probably in it. I don't think it would have started and ran without the key in the "ON" position, so the ignition switch is most likely OK.
Hi, Roadrunner,
No, it didn't ran.. only the starter itself worked but i don't have a spark.
Sorry if i wasn't clear enough...

I thought that might be what you meant, but I wasn't sure. Then it very well could be the ignition switch. Before digging into the ignition, try removing one of the plug wires from a plug and check for spark while jumping the starter relay with the key in the ignition in the "ON" position. If there is no spark, then it looks pretty good that it's the ignition switch. The only other thing I can think of would be simultaneously between the starter relay and the fuel pump, which is highly unlikely.
If it is the ignition switch, can i try this:
the + from the ignition coil directly to the battery?
And then try to start with the screwdriver on the starter relais?
If she starts, it's the switch.. or did i miss anything?

I don't know, I've never tried it before. I don't know if that will work or not or if it might fry something. I think the ballast resistor and the voltage regulator are between the two, so there might be problems with it. I would hate to see you fry your electrical system. Just pulling a plug wire and checking for spark while jumping the relay will let you know if the ignition switch is OK.

I tried pulling a plug wire and ther's no spark at all..
