Blow by?
A few weeks ago while driving about 70 mph, my 2.2 started leaking oil all over the exhaust. Took it to a shop and they say the rings are shot, allowing the pressure into the oilpan, blowing out the gasket. Since it runs strong and doesn't burn oil, I question this. Anyone have any knowledge of this? Thanks.
I agree, I don't think that that is the case either. If your rings were that bad you would have noticed a huge amount of blue smoke as it would burn the oil in the combustion chamber. Not only this, but it would have shown a very noticeable drop in power. It could still be a head gasket, but not your typical blown head gasket where it leaks from the combustion chamber. It could be just a leak from an oil passage from the head gasket. It could also be from a bad head gasket or possibly a cracked head. The only other thing that I can think of is a bad PCV adapter, the rubber elbow that connects the PCV valve to the valve cover. Other than that, I cannot think of anything else that it may be right now. How much oil did you loose and did you notice a drop in oil pressure when this happened?
I had blue smoke, but it looked like it was splatter on the exhaust. The underside was covered with oil. I changed the VC gasket and the PVC was clogged so I changed that. I'm thinking oilpan gasket.
The PCV (not PVC) could exaggerate your blowby if it was clogged. Did that fix it? The VC gaskets allways go bad - switch to a 89+ valve cover if the problem persists.
Rings would be a problem over time, not all of a sudden, unless it just was leaking for awhile and you didnt notice.

I haven't had the car that long. This happened on my 1st long trip since driving it from PA to VA. I replaced the VC gasket and PCV and then took in on the highway and it was still doing it. I guess the oil pan gasket is next.

Get a Chevy and you may have different problems, but with a car that old you're going to have them.
Oh, and what is your quals matt_guiver to be making that statement? You just sound like a troll with that comment.
