Default Tranny Problems on 2004

Rolling through the gears yesterday, pushed up into 3rd and got nothing. All gears are gone, stuck in nuetral. I didn't hear any cracks or pops so I assumed it was something simple like a shifter cable. Towed it to the dealer, they haven't dug into it but said it wasn't the cable because the linkage connected to the tranny still works. It's always shifted kind of hard but seemed to get worse, of course now that it won't engage it clicks through the gears real smooth like it should. Anybody know if the tranny is blown or just needs a new clutch? I doubt that it's the clutch since it hasn't been slipping.

I had the same problem. I just ordered a Dual Friction CF clutch and a Release Bearing. And i am good to go. Tranny will never blow unless you can manage to be going 40 mph and get the gear into Reverse. then you will blow it. Get a racing clutch instead of the stock one, it holds more and last longer.

the forks on these cars suck, and while you won't "blow" your tranny, it's not uncommon to bend a fork.

you probably broke the shifter mechanism in the tranny. it's not a big deal, and can be replaced rather easily. although much of the time they just give you a new tranny, it's more cost-effective than repairing your existing one.

i doubt it's the tob. i'm on my 2nd and it's shot too. if it was that it would have been possible grinding, but it would have been very difficult to get into gear before it blew. also, there would be noticable chatter from it when in neutral with the clutch no engaged.

Took a look at the SRT Forums, seems to be alot of problems with transmissions. Lots of stuff about 3rd gear issues like I had. Others have said since it was getting harder to get into gear that the synchro mesh gear was bad for awhile then the input shaft just sheared off. I also heard about the fork thing. Just doesn't seem right not to be able to drive these cars like they were meant to or have the tranny go junk on you. Sounds like either way their going to have to pull the tranny right? Might as well upgrade the clutch while it's out.

These T850 trannys are so simple to overhaul it's silly. The dealer has a 70% rule, where the cost to overhaul has to excede 70% of a new or reman unit to
justify replacement. I've done one 850 and a bunch of 350's.

The only trick on overhauling these is the need for a fixture/holder that holds the bellhousing so when you put the cases together, you can align the shift rails.

As long as there is no hole in the case, it's fixable. I did not realize that people are having problems like this. Send them to me, I'll overhaul/fix them.
