srt-4 or evo8?
It's true, what he said. Japanese cars have a higher resale value, that I am sure of. However, that is just because of the stigma attatched to american makes. Most likely the fault of ford. American cars haven't always been mechanically sound. That is changing though. The japanese cars are giving the consumer less for a high price and american makes are really paying attention to quality now. The SRT-4 has excellent parts. It was carefully made and it's a very sturdy car. It beat the STi and the Evo in a slalom and with a stage 2 it will smoke them on 1/4. The STi and Evo ARE good cars. But they are VERY different from the SRT-4. I don't know why people think they are so similar. The only thing they have in common is four doors and a turbo engine. Other than that, it's all different. The AWD system of the Evo/Sti makes them much heavier delivering less top end and different handling from the much lighter SRT-4. Of course, the Evo/Sti are more stable at high speeds, this is the case with ALL 4wd vehicles. All FR's are less stable at high speeds, this does not mean they aren't in control though. That lowered stability in itself is a different type of control. It allows for more freedom and requires an entirely different cornering technique. The SRT-4 is loaded with a lot of power but it's not like they ignored everything else. It's as well put together for its style and type as the Evo or the STi. The Subaru WRX sedan is a pathetic car for the price. It costs $36,995.00 before tax, here in canada. 220 hp with 200lb-ft of torque roughly, for that money. It's AWD, yes, but it is underpowered for the kind of performance someone wants at that price. It weighs too much, and requires more than 220hp. That's why the STi exists haha, however that car is $46,995.00 before tax here. And finally, there's a car fast enough to match a stock SRT-4. The interior is very fine, slightly fancier than the SRT-4, but not much fancier. I preffer the viper seats to the recaro. That's because I'm quite thin though hehe. Save your money, and buy an SRT-4 it's far more valuable for the price than the STi or Evo. With the STi and Evo, a big part of your money is going for that AWD and the pop-culture attatched to those two cars. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I wasn't willing to pay that much, especially when I could get a car that sounded better, and was faster for less!
Not to be rude about it but this question is kind of stupid..If your price range is an evo or sti then why are you lookin at an srt-4??..They are in totatlly different price ranges..At least compare it with something similar in price like a honda civic ex with some goodies..It just sounds kind of dumb because I dont know anyone when lookin for a car has a 10,000 dollar lee way to decide on getting a certain car. Just my opinion..
A SRT-4 is a $21,000 sportcompact that kicks butt in it's class. There ARE faster cars out there, but nowhere near the price of an SRT-4. Plus, for less than 2K in mods, you "raise the bar" even higher. If you want, drop $40K on something that MIGHT beat a SRT-4....with the $17K I save, I can buy a bike that will put anyones eyeballs in the back of their head....[sm=smiley36.gif]
Ok, couple things- first of all, Dusty wasn't talking about an Evo, he was just giving a generic $40K price to make a point- you might want to read the post again.
Secondly, seanie719, price had nothing to do with my decision, as I've said on other posts- why do people get so hung up on price? I looked at Evos, STis, and everything else, and chose the SRT because it's a great tuner car- it's light (no AWD), it's easy to tune (try tuning a fly-by-wire STi), and it's new technology (you're right scg, the engine in it's basic form has been around for over ten years- the EVO got crushed so badly in WRC the past few years that they didn't even field one last year and this year's car has finished two races last time a checked, carrying a grand 8 points, compared to the points leader's 54, so how is that a good thing?). I bought it because I like american and I like working on my own car.
That's cool you like the Evo- my friend has one and yeah it's a good car, fun to drive, but it's not what people here like. Frankly, I'm suprised Tympyst even asked the question.
Anyway, my point is, it's not like people here couldn't afford anything else- people get way too caught up on price. Many SRT owners will end up spending about the same amount of $ on their SRT that they would have spent if they had bought an STi or EVO, that's just not what they wanted.
However, if you want to persue the price issue, you'll never win that either, because for a couple grand an SRT will, in fact, smoke the other two, while still being a lot cheaper.
For me, it's a better car. For you, it's not. I agree to disagree.[sm=smiley33.gif]

OK, now it's time for my $.02.
First off, if you can afford a $35,000 STi your stupid as hell to buy one unless you live where it snows, because you can buy a slightly used Viper R/T10 for that much and crush just about anything you come across. Not to mention the looks and the women would be all over you.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley17.gif][sm=smiley16.gif]
Secondly, with $35,000 you can get a bone stock STi, an Evo VIII with one or two mods or an SRT-4 with damn near everything out there for it. Hell, I've personally watched 2 SRT-4's with only Stage 1 on them running 13.0-13.2 in the 1/4, sounds like Evo and STi territory for only $340. The '04 SRT-4 is only $20,999, now imagine putting another $13,660 into one on top of Stage 1.[sm=smiley3.gif]
Lastly, the SRT-4 is an equal to the STi and the Evo. If you even the traction by adding slicks to an SRT-4 you will drop a full second off of it's 1/4 mile time. The STi and Evo can launch at full power due to the AWD, if you put the slicks on the SRT-4 to even the traction between them it becomes a draw. 12.9 all around.[sm=smiley2.gif]
FYI: The SRT-4 is faster than the other two. The SRT-4's hit 153-155 MPH before the speed limiter kicks in, the other two top out in the 140's.[sm=smiley14.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

71RR, I don't mean to be an a$$ to you, but you are starting to get into magazine racer territory. Who the hell drives around on the street with slicks on their SRT???
Wasn't it you that said the SRT-4's performance is equal to the first gen Viper?
Why would you be stupid? Is there something wrong with AWD?
I know the SRT is fast, I own one, but there are alot of stock cars that can beat it.....the EVO and STI being 2 of them. Reading your post reminded me of when you started quoting magazine numbers about the GNX. I drove the GNX, it is quicker than my SRT. You can quote all the magazine numbers you want, I drove it, it IS quicker.
Like I said, I don't mean to be a d**k. You have been a wealth of information, but until you get out there and run against something, magazine numbers don't really mean sh*t.
Just my $0.02

I never said 1 word about driving the streets with slicks, although I wish we could. I was just proving the point that the SRT-4 only gets beat by the Evo and STi due to their AWD and that when the traction is equalized between them, they are equals.
The SRT-4's are just about equal to the stock '94 Vipers in a straight line. You can get a later year R/T10 which has more than the 400 horsepower that the '94's had. The Vipers exhaust is very restrictive, I have heard people claiming around 100 horsepower worth of restriction, but I cannot believe that number. If you gain even half that though, your then equal to the GTS's output. The GTS's run in the low 12's, one magazine after an entire day at the track with one got it to run an 11.99 in the 1/4.
There's nothing wrong with AWD, I would love to have a Stealth AWD AWS R/T TT. I even considered the STi before I bought the SRT-4, I really like the STi's. I actually prefered the 2 door 2.5RS, but I would have made it a 2 door STi. It's just that when compared to the options, why get an Evo or STi or even an SRT-4 with mods, if you can get a Viper for the same amount of money. That's why I said unless you live where it snows, because if you live where it snows and get a Viper for your daily driver, then your stupid for buying the Viper and not the STi or the Evo.
The numbers I got on the GNX was from a website devoted strictly to the GNX's. I simply copied and pasted what info they gave. I checked out a few sites about the GNX's and they all varied some, but that was the "common" number for them. There have been people on here that have driven the STi's and Evo's and say that they are not as quick or fast as their SRT-4, but the facts say the the STi and Evo are the quicker cars. The AWD feels different than the FWD and that is why they say the SRT-4 is quicker, because it feels quicker. And RWD feels different than FWD, but the facts show that the SRT-4 and the GNX run almost, if not, identical times in the 1/4. My stepmothers RWD '88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe felt quick as hell, it felt quicker than my modded Shelby Z, but it wasn't quicker than my Shelby Z. My Shelby Z was quicker than her Turbo Coupe, but the RWD made it feel quicker. Just because it feels quicker doesn't necessarily mean that it is. [sm=smiley2.gif]
