Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default Ramcharger 5.7 Hemi swap

Hello,

First poster here!

I currently drive a 2017 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L hemi. My brother, dad and I enjoy restoring classics in our free time. I am a big fan of the old Ramcharger and am looking into buying one and dropping the current 5.7 Hemi and transmission into an older (74-90) Ramcharger (haven't bought the project yet). I am just looking for advice on if this is something worth doing, what year ramcharger recommended for a swap like this, any other tips or advice. I know this is a broad post but anything will help!

Thank you!

I think its an awesome idea. You can buy complete crate motors, with trans, and all the electronics to make 'em go. (hellcat motor? ) Or, find a donor, and strip out everything you need. (cheaper route)

Welcome to DF!

Another option is use the frame with all the drive line and put the ramcharger body on it. You'll have to cut the frame to match the body's length and incorporate the wiring to the ramcharges but well worth it in the long run. Modern fuel economy/power with old school looks.

I am currently doing a Trailduster body on a 2012 Ram 1500 chassis. The easiest part of the job is shortening the frame.the Ram frame is 3 piece that slips together. I cut the weld at one end of the center sleeve and slid the ends together to get the correct wheelbase. I am using a Hotwire harness with the 5.7 and 6 speed automatic. One of the benefits of doing it this way is that I was able to leave the Ram fuel tank in the stock location. That simplifies the fuel system. You have to remove the Ram body mounts and fabricate new mounts for the body. I was able to adapt the Trailduster bumpers to the Ram frame without much difficulty. Left the rear cross member and trailer hitch intact. Using a shifter from a Dodge magnum v6. Should be driving it by the end of August.

I will soon try to post some pictures. I have not attempted to do that on this site but we will see. I am building this as a driver not a show piece. Using Denali power seats and built a custom instrument panel. It’s been a fun project. Is there anything on this site that will instruct me on posting pictures?
