Default 96 ram 5.9 speedo not working

I have a 96 ram 5.9 auto. My speedo, tach and odometer are not working. I replaced speed sensor on transmission. What else could it be?

Bad connection at the back of the instrument cluster. Try pushing in on it, and see if the tach wakes up.

I actually tried that before changing the sensor. It reads code p0500 for speed sensor and says it can cause those not to work, could it be on the rear axle?

I replaced speed sensor on transmission.
Did you rotate the housing until the teeth mesh?

This speed speed sensor doesnt have teeth it has a magnetic end on it. At least the one on the transmission. I dont know what the one on the rear axle looks like yet.

Then it has the wrong sensor in it. The VSS on the 96 is gear driven off the output shaft of the trans, or t-case, depending on how many drive wheels you have. At least, it is *supposed* to be gear driven....

Let's see if this picture can help. The top portion of it is the transfer case. If you have 4x4 it will be there, otherwise you're looking at the bottom part.

Then your t-case has been modified, or replaced. Check the tag that is visible in the pic, and there should be a date code on it somewhere. That looks like the 98 and up t-case. That is also why your speedo doesn't work.

How do you read the date on this?
