transfer case fluid change
I am going to change the fluid in my transfer case soon is there anything special I should do? How much fluid will it take I could not find it in the owners manual. What brand fluid should I use? Also thinking about putting in a tcase saver what are your guys thoughts on those? Thanks

When I do mine, I buy about twice the fluid I need or more. I drain out the old fluid, then I put half of the new fluid in a squirtable container and squeeze that fluid into the t-case fill hole. It immediatly runs out the drain hole, but it runs out very dirty. I keep squirting it in until it runs out clean. I just think this gets rid of a lot of the dirty fluid that is still in the t-case that doesn't come out by just draining it. Then I close the drain plug and fill it up to capacity with the rest of the brand new fluid. I use ATF+4 in mine.

drivetrain.com is the only place i've seen the tcase saver. if anyone can find it anywhere else let me know. its damned expensive at drivetrain.
here's some tips -
1. the hex key is 10mm, don't use 3/8 inch it will strip out the center of the SOFT aluminum plug.
2. remove the FILL plug before removing the DRAIN plug. can you guess why. re-read #1.
3. it takes about a quart of ATF+4 to refill a 1500/231, maybe 1-1/4.
4. apply some liquid teflon or rtv to the drain and fill plug threads and just snug them when reinstall. don't torque them to 40 pounds. see #1.
5. the tapered squirt cap from a bottle of gear oil works good for squirting the oil in the fill hole of the t-case (and the diff). i always save them from the gear oil bottles.

$50 ain't all that bad, really. I traded 'em a new TV cable for the one they broke on my truck and saved three bucks.
