OPERATION
The camshaft position sensor contains a hall effect
device that provide cylinder identification to the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM) (Fig. 4) or (Fig. 5).
The sensor generates pulses as groups of notches on
the camshaft sprocket pass underneath it. The PCM
keeps track of crankshaft rotation and identifies each
cylinder by the pulses generated by the notches on
the camshaft sprocket. Crankshaft pulses follow each
group of camshaft pulses.
When metal aligns with the sensor, voltage goes
low (less than 0.3 volts). When a notch aligns with
the sensor, voltage spikes high (5.0 volts). As a group
of notches pass under the sensor, the voltage
switches from low (metal) to high (notch) then back
to low. The number of notches determine the amount
of pulses. If available, an oscilloscope or DRBIII
t
PEP Module can display the square wave patterns of
each timing event.

I sent that piece out of the complete service manual that you can get from this forum. I thought it might help you understand how the sensor works. You can get a complete manual (but it's an Intrepid manual) by doing the following:
Click on Dodge forum on the top menu
Scroll down and click on Dodge Intrepid
Scroll down and click 2nd Gen Intrepid
Scroll down and click on THE HOLY GRAIL
Then click on the link 2nd Gen LH service manual
from there you can download parts 1 and 2 of the manual.
You will need Adobe.

My 2 cents. i changed took off timing chain cover on my 06 to put on a gasket for coolant leak. i had to pull camshaft sensor as one of the things to remove cover. the camshaft wasn't seeded just right and received running problems as well as starting.
manual says to put the tab of paper on bottom of camshaft sensor before installing. dealer was going to sell me a whole pack, only needed one, they wouldn't see just one.
cut out a tab from a business card. wipped bit of grease on bottom of sensor and attached circled tab. the tab allows the space to be correct between sprocket for timing. van ran better after this. still not sure why the tab was needed since it appears that when sensor it installed it would bottom out against the metal surrouding hole inserted into. but it worked.
