Hellcat Charger-Turned-Magnum Build Gets Trackhawk Power
Charger has the rear roof and hatch of a Magnum with the engine and AWD system of a Trackhawk.
More than a year ago, we brought you the interesting build project of YouTuber Junkyard Dave, who was transforming a Dodge Charger into a modern day sport wagon with Hellcat power. Since this project started, there have been more than 50 videos posted to the channel and frankly, the progress has been very slow. However, as time has gone on, the intended end product has changed several times, adding the widebody design and the drivetrain from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk to the build sheet.
This project is called the Hellwagon, but it will technically be a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody AWD Wagon and it will be one of the most unique modern Mopar builds we have seen once completed.
The Original Charger Hellwagon Plan
When we first talked about Junkyard Dave’s Dodge Charger project, his plan was to take a modern day sedan and add the rear roofline and hatch of the last Dodge Magnum along with a Hellcat drivetrain, creating a modern day Charger sport wagon. A few people have already done this by grafting the front end of the modern Charger onto a Magnum, but Dave is taking the reverse approach, adding the Magnum rear end to the Charger body.
Originally, he planned to modify the supercharged Hellcat Hemi to yield upwards of a thousand horsepower, making this one wicked wagon. The project planned to be a bit more difficult than he expected, but the build direction and the effort being made to build a proper Charger wagon is impressive.
Adding Trackhawk Power
As time went on, Dave found a burned out Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk that would serve as the drivetrain donor. That meant that in addition to getting the rear body design of a Magnum, this Charger will have the all-wheel-drive system of the 707-horsepower Jeep. The only issue with that direction is that the car now sits oddly high, as the bulky AWD parts of the Jeep take up more space than what is available under a modern Charger with a normal ride height.
In addition to the Jeep all-wheel-drive drivetrain, the YouTuber also added wheel flares to create the newer widebody look, along with a custom carbon fiber roof skin. Once those parts were in place, the car was painted B5 Blue and along the way, some parts from a Challenger Redeye and other engine upgrades were acquired to help boost the output of the supercharged Hemi.
In his most recent video, Dave is still working on key engine components outside of the car, so it appears as though it could be some time before this unique Trackhawk-powered Dodge Charger Hellwagon is on the road, but when it does hit the streets, we imagine that it will be well worth the wait. If nothing else, it will be a true one-of-one modern Mopar machine.
Below, we have included the two most recent videos from the channel. In the first, we get a look at the current status of the Charger, which has been painted and is now being sanded and buffed from top to bottom. During the course of that video, we get an update on the project along with a look at the body in near-finished form. In the second video, we get a look at the Trackhawk engine, which had to be completely torn down and rebuilt due to the massive fire that destroyed the supercharged Jeep. However, if you have time to kill and you want to see more on this build, scrolling back through his videos reveals literally dozens of videos showcasing small portions of the build.
