Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody is reportedly part of a commercial shoot, pointing towards production reality.

Dodge introduced the Charger SRT Widebody at the Spring Festival of LX last month, stating that it was a design concept being displayed for the sake of public feedback. We think that this widened sedan was greenlighted for production before it was shown off at Spring Fest, but in any case, the company claimed that it was simply a concept.

Based on the video below from the Evil_SRT Instagram account, the company is doing something else with the Charger SRT Widebody and this time, it isn’t wearing the flashy camo. As you can see in the brief footage, this car looks ready for the showroom.

When the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Concept debuted last month in California, it featured a unique black, white and red wrap that helped to hide the body lines. Granted, that wrap didn’t really hide anything substantial, but it added a bit of mystery to the vehicle.

This time, the car is wearing a traditional paint scheme, sporting a hue that appears to be a bit darker blue than B5. We don’t get to see the front end and we don’t see much of the side, but we get a good look at the rear end and from that angle, there is one key difference from the concept.

It looks as though the spoiler on this blue car is similar to the unit found on the current production R/T models rather than the prominent blade-style spoiler on the concept. For those unsure, the Charger Scat Pack and Hellcat wears a much more aggressive rear spoiler with elevated edges, but this spoiler appears to be pretty flat from side to side. We cannot read the badging on the trunk lid, but it does appear to be an SRT logo and the Instagrammer claims that it is an SRT Hellcat model.

Why This Matters

The Instagrammer is claiming that this widebody Charger was part of a commercial shoot, but there is nothing in this footage to support that. The car appears to be backing out of a group of box trucks, the closest of which is a Ford and there are no cameras around or on the car. It does have a color-matched license plate, which leads us to believe that this car is being used for a photoshoot of some point, but none of that really matters.

What matters is that the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody is being used for something, it isn’t wearing the concept wrap and it has some unique features from the concept. That supports that idea that the widebody Charger is more than just a design concept and we would bet that in the coming months, we will learn a whole lot more about this car and others like it.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
