Ram TRX Is Nice and Loud on a Cold Start

2021 Ram 1500 TRX Rear

Ram 1500 TRX showcased in a cold start video on Instagram reveals a lovely exhaust note.

When FCA introduced the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, the company rolled out plenty of information, pictures and videos. Some of those videos included exhaust sounds, but they also included narration and music, making it harder to hear the supercharged Hemi roaring. Plus, sound clips from official company videos have been mastered, so we don’t always get the best example of a real world exhaust note.

Fortunately, a video posted to the HydroTRX Instagram account gives us our first chance to hear the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX roar to life. The video is short, but it is the best we have seen or heard while also being the first “cold-start video” online. As we expected, the truck sounds great, but it seems louder at idle than the Dodge Hellcat cars or the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

Blue TRX

In the video below, we get a look at the back of a 2021 Ram 1500 TRX test truck in Hydro Blue. We don’t know who runs this Instagram account or who they are to have access to this truck, but as you can see, if has Michigan manufacturer’s plates. This means that it is a company-owned test vehicle that is likely in the possession of an FCA employee or an employee of a company that works with FCA.

Ram TRX Fob

The video begins with a look at the rear end of the blue TRX and a look at the model-specific key with “Ram TRX” on the fob with a red insert. As you can see, there is no red key like the Dodge Hellcat cars, but the red model logo seems like a nod to the red Hellcat keys.

Ram TRX Start and Idle

After a look at the key fob, the man behind the camera remotely starts the Ram TRX. The supercharged Hemi roars to life and it sounds pretty great. It seems to be louder on start-up than the Trackhawk or the Dodge Hellcat cars, but we will have to hear them side-by-side to confirm that. The cameraman walks closer to the truck, giving us a look at the undercarriage and the exhaust tips as the supercharged Hemi idles. The video ends with the cameraman panning back and forth across the rear end of the test truck.

Ram TRX Exhaust Tip

If the Ram 1500 TRX is similar to the Dodge Hellcat cars and the Jeep Trackhawk in the overall exhaust note, we expect that it will sound even better under load. However, the TRX sounds fantastic in this short cold-start clip, contributing to the interest in the world’s most powerful production truck.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
