Default Visual Difference 46RH vs. 46RE

I'm calling around to differnt part yards looking for a new A518. They say they have them, but they dont know if its a 46RH or a 46RE. Is there any obvious differecnes visually to the two? If anyone has photos, that would help a lot!

I *think* I cannot remember, the only difference is a 3 prong plug in on the left side of the transmission.

The 46R Hydraulic (95 and older) controled trans has only 1 3 prong plug going directly into the trans. Its beside the shifter and throttle pisition lever .The 46R Electronic (96 +)controlled trans should have more wires to shift the trans. But I have not looked at the new one ,so can not tell you what it looks lik. But if they do not know what year they removed it form I would go some where else.

Default RE: Visual Difference 46RH vs. 46RE

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, but I'm STILL trying to get my truck up and going...

It seems all the A518's have left California. Damn.

So I just got off the phone, and this guy says he has one, but he needs to know if my plus is a circle or an oval. By the sound of it, its an oval, being that the 3 prog plug is on the 46RH. So does that mean that the 46RE has the Circle plug with 8 prongs???

Thanks for the help!!

Yes, the RH transmissions have a oval, 3-pin connector. The RE transmissions have a circle, 8-pin connector.
The oval connector looks to be on the left side of the transmissions, where as thecircle connector on the right side.

Don't get confused by the circle park/neutral switch (3-pin connector) located on the left side.

im not sure what you mean don’t get confused with the 3pin connector on the left. Do you mean it would be on the driver side or passenger side of the vehicle. Also does it go directly into the transmission

On the RH, there is more than one three pin connector. One is for the neutral safety switch, and it is right below where the shift linkage hits the trans. The other is the transmission control connector, it's about halfway back, on the drivers side, and plugs straight down into the top of the valve body of the trans. That connector is in the same place in the RE trans, but, it's eight pins, not three.

Reviving this 15 year old thread might be shedding some light on something I was wondering just this morning. How timely.

My 1993 has an A518. I see it referred to as a 46RH as well. Is that because in 1996 they introduced an electronic version of the same transmission and differentiated them by renaming the old one as a 46RH for hydraulic and 46RE for electronic?

I think the naming nomenclature changed a couple times over the years. GM certainly couldn't make up their minds about what to call their transmissions...... Is it a 700R4? Or is it a 4L60??
