I have sprayed WD40 on the pulleys. Might not be the best for the belt but it helped track down the culprit. Could be alternator, idler, steering pump, air conditioner etc...

You may have to take the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand if the spray does not work. Also wiggle up and down, in and out.

I also have a slight noise from that same area at idle, not a whine but, more of a small rattle. I took the belt off and spun/checked the tensioner and idler pulleys, no wobble or play there. They spun freely and silent. Some have mentioned a stretched timing chain, but it runs too good to be that (just guessing here though.)

I read where you can take the whole belt off, run it for 30-60 secs. to see if it still does it. Haven't tried that yet.

You say a whining noise. It could possibly be just the belt. Mine had a little whine a couple of weeks ago and I sprayed some belt dressing on it....gone now.

FWIW belt dressing is not a good idea for serpentine belts it will gum up the grooves and the belt could jump off.

best way to locate a noise in your drive belt is to get a long screwdriver next to your ear and put it near all moving pulleys; that will help you pinpoint the noise. Just be extremely careful around the fan and other moving pulleys. Don't put the screwdriver on the pulley itself, just around it. That is what all of us auto technicians do when we're trying to isolate a noise.

I totally agree with the screw driver and heater hose. Good call.
