When I bought my 1988 Dakota off my grandfather I was given 4 keys minus the glove box. In other words two sets, both sets have one ignition key and one door key. I really wish I had one that fit both, did they even offer this option?

My buddie has a late 90s F150, when he bought it from a used sales lot it came with 4 keys as well. Only thing is three of his keys fit the ignition AND door and the fourth is a door only key (like if you needed someone to get something for you but not have access to moving the vehicle).

Any input on your Gen I keys? Can I have one made?

As for the early years I don't know if they came with 1 key but the newer years came with 1 key. My 89 TA came with 2 keys factory, the ignition key had the chip in it, 80's style security ignition.

Most large locksmiths can re-pin the locks to use a common key.

I have a locksmith on my street that works out of his home I'll see if it's something he can take on, sounds like it's going to be expensive though...might be cheaper swapping ignitions if that is possible from a 92-96 (IF they came with a single key option)

I know...I'm planning on getting some key blanks with the Dodge logo, then get another set cut.

My 95 only has one key for door and ignition also. But the driver side lock cylinder is going to need replaced soon cause its hard to unlock the door. You have to kinda wiggle the key before it will turn. So if i buy a new door lock cylinder will it use a different key?

 

Same problem here! My drives door key needed to be wiggled to unlock the door, I'm going to get the locks from both doors at a junkyard so they match then attempt to swap ignitions so all 3 use the same key.

 

My 90 is as base model as you can get and one key works everything.

Sounds like the OP wants a valet key, though they typically open only the drivers door and ignition.

 

I think MINE is as base as it gets, 3 separate keys, crank windows, no AC, they even cheaped out on a TACH! It couldn't get any more inconvenient then maybe having two keys next to each other like bank vaults have haha.
