Default Burning oil

So i have noticed that my truck is burning oil, verified by a buildup of black deposit on the inside of my tailpipe. What could be the cause of this?

a lot of things.... lol

can be plenum gasket
valve seals
oil rings(piston rings)
head gaskets (rare but can cause oil blow by)
AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE .. OLD AGE!
running real rich with bad fuel economy .. carbon deposits..

also based on the fact its old it could just be the soot deposits.. if your burning any sort of oil you would see blue smoke either while driving or on start up.. especially

is it a dry black dirty soot..... or is it wet oily soot.. is the question

well dry soot is sign of running rich (bad O2 sensors) when u tramp on it if its black smoke its running rich as hell

colour of smoke tells a lot....

Blue burning oil
black RICH as **** unburnt gas
White (normal when cold) but also sweet smell indicates antifreeze in exhaust

Thanks alot bossman. I love the older full steel trucks and I am gonna refurbish this truck, but I want to get it running smooth first. It sat for a year before I bought it. Building a fixit list right now. So far:

AIC
MAP
Torque Converter(temp fixed with Lucas treatment)
u-joints all around
brake booster
o2 sensors
tires all around(bought with perelli racers on it. Not sure what the seller was thinking, living in the northeast with snow)
inside interior
paint job

Nothing to bad. Just wish it was summer out, lol.

You're using a lot of oil. Smoke at startup is valve seals and worn guides. Smoke when accelerating is probably seals and guides, too.

Have you done a compression check? You need to do it in two steps, first--engine warm, throttle plate fully open. Second, engine warm, squirt a bit of oil into the spark plug hole (you want to get enough in to seal the rings temporarily) and then crank with the throttle fully open.

Compression should be between 125 & 140 psi. If it goes up after adding oil, it's the rings. Otherwise you have leaking valves.

The thing is about leaking valve seals & guides is that it will destroy the rings fairly quickly. Oil burns a lot hotter than gas, the additional heat damages the rings & causes more cylinder wear & warps them too.

So my compression is at 136psi on avg. Tested three times and thats the average. Lowest test was 132psi. The smoke was from running rich. All my o2s were bad. I did however notice when i opened my oil fill i got a puff of smoke. That cant be good.
