transfer carse rear half cracked
ok, yesterday i traded a 01 Wrangler with an engine about to go boom and a rusted out frame for a 93 Dakota 4wd, found out today I have a transfer case with a crack in it, since I'm in Rich Square NC and work is 40 miles away, I have a stupid question, can I drive it as long as I keep oil in the transfer case and don't use anything but 2hi?
until I get a chance to get at least a back half of the case?
Dakotas here aren't exactly the most popular

Ill try to post a pic
Yea its leaking, it comes out from under the JB weld and coats the entire rear end, bed axle and all with the gl5 that somebody put in there, that's why I need to know if I can drive it as long as I keep putting fluid in it, I have other issues too but they are all simple

There are different 231d transfer cases out there. They are not all the same. For openers, some have a gear driven speedo. Others have a speed sensor. And of course, dodge is different then chevy. Oh, FWIW I believe you should have dextron fluid and not gear oil in the transfer case.
If you dont find one, check car-part. com for used and alot of the junkyards will ship.

93 should have the provision for the VSS in the tailhousing. (I don't think that changed until 98)
But yeah, ragtop is correct, that are a buncha different flavors of NP231 out there. Should be a round tag on the back of the t-case, that tells ya which one you have. (Should be NP231D, or maybe NV231D.... or, if by some wild stroke of luck, you got the HD version, it would be NP231DHD......)
So far as I know, you MUST get a t-case that already has the provision for the VSS, as it is gear driven, so, gotta have the gear on the output shaft as well. The newer ones won't have it, nor do they have the splines to put it on. (so far as I know.) According to theory, if you absolutely MUST get the newer case, you *might* be able to swap the output shaft.... but, that's a mighty big "if"....
