Default Stereo

Afternoon,

Friday while running around stereo worked fine, climbed in yesterday and nothing, no lights, no sound. It is an after market stereo that I have had for 9+ years, never had any problems with it, except when I have accidentally hit the face-plate release button. Took off the face-plate and reset it, still nothing.

Quick question, the fuse for the stereo is there anything else on it? I checked all lights and such last night and everything seems to be working. I plan to go out in a bit and check everything out, but figured if I knew the radio was on the same fuse as X and X works that checks one thing off. Will still check the fuses but it would move down the list a bit.

Thank you.

There will be two fuses; also, don't forget to check the ground wire, it may have worked loose enough to cause problems (the ground is through a wire to the inside framework of the dash; I can reach the one on my 1988 by removing the knee panel and laying on my back looking up inside the dash. Your 1993 may be different, I dunno.)

Ralph,

Thank you. Two fuses, check. Will check all that when I put in the new stereo.

I actually ordered a new stereo off Amazon, it was on my To Do list for next month, has Bluetooth since I more listen to I-Heart and Spotify than local stations. I will replace the speakers as planned next month.

Got a nice set upwith a magnetic cell phone holder, where if I am using Google maps it is in view where I would normally be scanning.

Order the wiring adapter also; don't butcher the factory wiring to save $10 or so.

Again, the ground or - wire for the head unit will need to be connected to the chassis separate; it's not in the wiring harness. Take the - wire, attach a ring or spade terminal to the end of it, and put it under the same ground point the current wire fits. It's fairly obvious; it's the braided one that's bolted to the back of the stock radio.

I've been enjoying my head unit, but I stuck a 8G thumb drive into the USB port to listen to, being as how I keep hitting out of cell service while driving (East Texas, Southwest Arkansas, Northwest Louisiana ... all considered "rural" areas.)

I bought a new harness and installation kit, only cost me an extra $12.00 total. Since the stereo already in it is aftermarket is has an updated harness, but this way I am starting from scratch, I can solder the conections and then pull the dash and put the new stereo in and the double Cigarette Lighter Socket that I am going to place under the dash towards the passenger side, to run vacuum cleaners, coolers and such.

Heh.

I have a pigtail I added to the current cig lighter for when I put a pair of outlets on the passenger side, in the trim between the cup holder and the vents (that part of the dash is empty, so perfect for anything I want to put there.)

Ralph,

I replaced the cigerette lighter about 11 months ago with a dual USB socket as it had never worked, I don't smoke and needed to charge my cell more than anything. I was only later that I realaized that while the USBs are nice that a mini compressor, cooler and other things are all of a sudden out of the picture.

Toby,

Thank you I will check that.

What gets me is that it was working when I turned it off, then nothing when I turned it on. Now I am no mechanic but I thought most fuses blew due to too much "power" and they overloaded. Now it was storming but I think I would notice and have more trouble if lightning had struck.

Actually, most fuses blow when power is applied due to inrush current (same time most light bulbs blow out).

I'd still check ALL the fuses.

I plan to check all the fuses and the ground wire. Been fighting a cold and inner ear infection so don't think standing in the street or bending under the hood is a good idea today, my luck I would fall and get ran over.
