one other problem to be overcome, the newer transmission that used an electric shift transfer case, does not have the boss's on the side to mount the orig. transfer case shifter.
I still have not got around to making something to make it work.
And if yours is out of a 4.7 truck, the engine to transmission is the same, but the cover plate and the mounts that go to the diff. are different. I used a 4.7 cover and modified my mounts.
I knew about the bosses missing, I'm going to design up a plate for it I can share with you once I'm done.
It came out of a 3.9l so I think I should be good on the mounting side of things, as soon as I figure out the bottom mount.
Im pulling from memory, but I just used the orig. style donut mounts and cut a new steel plate. Also, look at post by 89 ragged. I think he added a piece of steel to his orig. plate for the additional 2 bolts.
Threw a coat of paint on the rear axle. Probably won't last long back there as they usually take a beating from gravel, but at least it'll look good until I start to drive it.
Well I had a wrestling match with the parts truck and got the crossmember out and it turned out this will be alot easier than I anticipated. See pictures below for more info. I'll just need to get a new mount for a 2003 transmission as the one that came with the tranny was damaged during removal. Next hurdle will be mounting the transfer case shifter which I know won't be so easy. Here are the two crossmembers side by side. The painted one is from my 1991. The rusty one is from the 1992 parts truck. You can see they are identical except that the 1992 crossmembers has 2 extra holes in it (it even still has the holes for the old style mounts). The two extra holes are there to mount a transition piece. Here is the transition piece. So pre-1992 vehicles this is all you need to mount a newer transmission to your truck using the newer mounts. You'll just need to drill 2 holes in your existing crossmembers, that's all Chrysler did anyways. Here are the two mounts side by side The left one is from a 2003 nv3500. The right one is from a 1992 automatic They both have the exact same 4 stud pattern to mount to the crossmember/transition piece. The only difference is the 1992 mount only has 2 bolts to the transmission, while the 2003 has 4 holes to the transmission. Here are the 2 mounts again just with the transition piece dropped onto the new style mount, just testing that it does fit.
Sandblasted and primered the brake.backing plates and transmission mount adapter today. I found out unfortunately late that adjusting the pressure regulator on my blasting cabinet from 80 to 100 psi makes it work much much better and cut my blasting time at least in half.
Got my bearing kit for the rear end today, as well as the clutch pack set, so will be putting the rear end back together this weekend.
Well I had an unpleasant surprise today. Was getting my diff ready to install the new clutch pack and when I got the carrier out I realized it looked different than the service manual pictures.
Turns out I don't have a clutch type lsd, but a cone type sure grip. I didn't think these trucks would have had an option of a cone sure grip, so I'm wondering if someone swapped in a different carrier at some point in this trucks life. Unfortunately these aren't really rebuild able, so I'll have to come up with something else to put in.
