why are you going all the way back to 1967? Back then the water pump outlet was on the other side and the pump itself was cast iron.
Other than a choice of 6 vane or 8 vane impeller from about 1972 til at least 1990 the water pumps on 3.9, 318, and 360 will directly interchange. The pic shown above is 1987. If he found a 318 in a pickup or even a 5th Ave around that year,, and takes the water pump pulley from it, he should be good.

Sakes, you can go back to '64 with the 273 V-8. Engineers tend to change things to the point it seems they just need to keep their job.

Ahem.

The pickups used the exact same accessory mounts; THAT won't work any better. EDIT: Go look at the parts lists in the FAQ; look at the 1986/1987 for the accessory drive mounts. Yep, high alternator, and idler for no-AC. On the 318/5.2 and the 360/5.9.

The Allpar drawings and pictures also show the 318 being with a high mount alternator, requiring a bypass pulley, by the late 70's.

I went back to 1967 because you said "back in the day" and didn't say WHAT day. So I went back to where yes, you didn't need an idler. What years were YOU talking about? I also posted where one guy worked out how to avoid the idler. But eh.

May I ask what your point is, besides grousing about the good old days without paying attention to the current situations?

Not trying to cause issues just trying to help out, it wasn't yesterday but I know that I have done what the op wants to do without an idler pulley (or dummy compressor) and without much headache either. I've messed with alot of 80s dodges over the years, cars, trucks and rwd cars. And I remember several that had a 3 groove water pump pulley, the belt from one of which went around the ps pump, water pump and crank, while the other 2 went around the alternator, crank and water pump. It isn't the low or high mount alternator that is the issue, without that water pump pulley I mentioned, the belt will still hit the water pump housing but with it, it will miss the water pump housing just like it would if the AC compressor was there.
i do remember the last of the LA 360 engines in trucks and vans without ac, that had the idler in place of the compressor. More than 1 way to deal with it.
