Hello everyone. I bought a southern Dakota a while back. Very clean truck but has needed some mechanicals to get back road worthy. I am nearly there but need to address a leak on the trans. I have a factory service manual (a true Dodge Dakota FSM, not Chiltons/Haines, etc) and it does not show what this is. Plastic fitting with a hose that runs up into the engine bay and is open on the end. I am doubtful this is a factory vent especially being the vents are generally on the top....I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
P.O. Smeared the silicone in an effort to stop the bleeding. FAIL
Is that the speedometer cable adapter? Can you tell where its actually leaking from in there? I think there is just an o-ring between the fitting there, and the trans case. I would expect that it is sealed internally to prevent leaks out where the cable attaches.

I don't think so? The only thing attached to it is a rubber vac line that runs to the engine bay and is open ended. And my speedometer works so....
This is On the pass side of the trans just ahead of the t case.
I believe it must be some form of a vent. I have a 87 and the orig. transmission is setting in my garage. It has a rubber plug in that hole.
In the below picture, you can see the standard vent on top.... BTW does your have the vent on top? and what year is yours?
Sorry guys, I'm not getting notifications. Will try to fix that.
That is interesting your trans has a rubber plug in that spot. My trans has the vent on top like you mention. It is a 1990.
I will try and find another diagram. My original FSM does not show anything here. It covers rebuilding and R/R but not much else. Will also check oil level.
My 87 fsm is the same....... Do you have any other problems with the trans other then that leak? The one I have only has 80,000 miles on it. Ran fine, just pulled to put a NV3500 and a 5.9 magnum in the truck.
No sir, no problems at all. Just wanting to make it right before getting it on the road. The silicone gobbed everywhere doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. I'd really like to find what is supposed to be there before opening it up but I may have to do just that.
How is that rubber plug on yours fastened? Is it actually threaded or just pressed in?
It doesn't make a lot of sense that a vent would be so low on the case.
