Default Fuel tank issues

Hello out there. I have a 1989 Dakota base model 2.5L 5 speed rwd. The fuel tank is a 15 gallon with a crack. Will the 20 gallon tank bolt in where the 15 gallon tank fits?

Strangely enough, the 22 gallon was an extra cost option (or rolled into other option packs); but the 15 gallon is a rare one, it is.

How much gas remains in the 22 gal tank when the idiot light comes on? When my gauge went kaput in my truck is when I realized the gauge and the idiot light were separate. Guess I never thought about it prior. What kind of circuit is that idiot light anyway?

Depending on the year - it's either a circuit board on the cluster, or it's a contact that closes when the wiper arm goes low enough.

For my 1988, it's the separate contact.

On my Dakota? Don't know; but low enough that the truck won't start when backed into my driveway (which is at about a 15* incline). So I don't wait that long.

Well, that aint much. I know I've gone past 30 miles once that idiot light went on. So at least a two-gallon warning on mine. And then when I filled it to the neck I pumped in only 20.5 gallons. So by my math there was still 1.5 gals remaining in the tank. Don't know how accurate they are when they say a 22 gallon tank.

Well, one time I pulled up to the gas station and the truck coughed and died; coasting into the pump.

I put 22.5 gallons in ...

I do NOT recommend this to anyone!!!

Let me be the stupid one

I have a 93 Extended Cab 5.2 with the 22 gallon tank. My fuel gauge stopped being accurate (again) about a year after having the fuel pump replaced (due to inaccurate readings). I have determined that my light comes on when I have roughly 4 gallons left. Pretty consistently. I once had a close call, started chugging waiting for the red light to change, the gas station was on the other side of the intersection. Filled up and it took 21.75 gallons. Pretty close call. (And gas was about 4.75 a gallon...). So I know that on my truck I have about 4 gallons when my light comes on.

I think you’re right. About 4 gallons. It’s more than I was thinking.
