Maybe it’s adjustable but not collapseable.

Please pardon me. I’m thinking out loud here.

That's where it's supposed to slide in and out for the later 1st Gens, yes.

If it's where I'm envisioning it at.

Throw a little fridge under there too. Drink a few beers and watch a ballgame between wacks.

Hmmmm. Maybe that’s my plan of attack. Target the mid shaft.

Lemme post a photo or two tomorrow. It’s an attachment design I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. Might help if you can explain it to me if you can. Or maybe I’ll figure it out after taking a closer look

Ralph, I don’t know exactly what you’re planning with your control arm project but I was just notified that RockAuto got in 2 of those Delphi coil spring isolators. Only 2. Don’t know if these are your spec or if this is the route you’re going but they’re there for the taking for now. I suspect not for long tho.

IIRC, yours is a 1993?

I've included the instructions from the 1993 manual on how to remove the column; I bet the first few steps down to the "slide the shaft down onto the lower coupler" is what you're looking for. The diagram also covers where the spring pin (roll pin) is.

With the correct size punch, roll pins generally come out fairly easy. Access is usually the issue.

Yes, ‘93. I was looking at that page in the FSM too. They have me removing steering wheels and the such. I’m thinking I could pull down on the rack and it will slide off. I mean, pulling the rack is what my goal is anyway.

And access could very well be the biggest obstacle. That sucker is rusted up pretty good too. And probably my biggest concern is wacking on it. I'd be afraid I'd damage the shaft, the pinion, or both.

Chrysler has done some really stupid stuff over the years. Using a roll pin in the steering shaft might be one of them.

I'm gonna take a couple snapshots and post them. They tell a more comprehensive story than the FSM. Maybe y'all can add some tips and tricks after looking at that mid-column connection.

When I drove the roll pin out on my FIRST rack replacement (Cardone, lasted about 10,000 miles!), I put a #10 screw with a prevailing torque nut on it through the hole.
