I have a 87 and researched what you are suggesting. The problem is, I dont think anyone makes a distributor that will work.......
It used to be, (25 or so years ago) mopar offered an electronic ignition package, camshafts, 4 bbl intakes, headers, etc for the 3.9 but it has been discontinued for a long time.
A thought I had was to use one of the aftermarket GM style V8 distributors that are designed for SBM V8's
Then if possible, use the trigger wheel and distributor cap from a GM 4.3
But honestly, I have no idea if its possible.......
The carb would be pretty simple. You currently have a holley 6280 and it would not be hard to convert to a 2280.

At the end of the day, I ended up converting mine to a 5.9 magnum with a edelbrock carb intake.....

Good luck and let us know what you do.

im not sure of the year but you can use a distributor from a 3.9 that had a tbi style injection and then connect distributor to an msd box .

Out of curiosity, have you actually done this? The reason I ask, I was told that the factory distributor was not compatible with the holley of fast efi systems.
I "think" the factory distributor is a hall effect design.........
It would surprise me if it worked with msd......
I could be wrong...... wont be the first or last!

I could see how the magnum series distributors wouldn't work, they are indeed a hall-effect switch, but, the switch only changes state twice per distributor revolution, and I suspect the holly is going to require a pulse for each individual cylinder, so, 6 changes per dist revolution..... Do the TBI distributors use the same cam sensor as the magnums? Or is there actually a six pulse H-E switch in there?

The distributor for the 87-91 3.9 was a "hall effect" style distributor.
Below is the pick up coil used in the 87-91 3.9.
I can post a picture from the service manual showing it as a hall effect, but it will be this evening before I could.

Here is a picture of the complete distributor. If you notice, the stock distributor has no vacuum advance or centrifical advance.

out of curiosity i looked threw some spare parts and found that the 6 sided trigger wheel off a slant 6 distributor will fit on the v8 distributor for the la engine..but had no caps or rotors to see if they would interchange.

Its a shame that there is little to no support in the aftermarket for these engines. I frequent a site that caters to A body mopars. Lots of post considering the use of the 3.9 for hotrods....... until they see there is nothing available to modify them with,
