Groaning while in Reverse

Groaning while in Reverse
I just started noticing this problem.. When I put my Durango into reverse to back out of the driveway it groans loud. But when I put it into drive to drive off, the groaning stops. It only happens when it'sin reverse. It has a little over 142,000 miles on it.Anyone know what may be causing my truck to be groaning while in reverse? I'm stumped as to where to start looking..

RE: Groaning while in Reverse
Check the fluids on the tranny. change the fluids if neccessary. Look for any signs of debris in the fluid. Hopefully maybe a simple tranny maintenance from tranny shop or dealer where they will adjust your bands, etc may do the trick. Otherwise, it is tell tale signs your tranny is about to bite the dust. Most owners here that lost their tranny including me starting seeing problems starting with reverse gear.

True. Also things to look at are in the rear end.
If the friction modifier isn't in the rear end it will do this.
1. When was the last time you had your rear end fluid replaced?
2. Been driving in deep water?
3. Warn out friction modifier in the rear end.
I think the best thing is to get someone else to stand outside the truck when you are backing the vehicle up and listen where it is coming from so that you can help pin point the location of the issue.

RE: Groaning while in Reverse
All of this is only the case if it is goaning while MOVING backwards. He made it sound like it makes the groaning sound when put in reverse even when stopped which would point to a tranny problem not a rear end problem.
