Drag racing the Durango
A Buddy of mine and me are gonna be racing for fun at a local drag strip. Ive never done it and dont know the 1st thing about how to prepare. What am I looking at here? I have an '03 Durango 4x4. Im thinking of getting a K&N filter this weekend and other than that I dont know how to prepare. Are there any tips/tricks to get some better times?

Change the plugs to OEM champion.
91 or 93 octane (I like Chevron) and some octane booster. Run her down real low on fuel then put in 4 gallons so as to cut weight. K&N filter drop in and pipe some true cold air in.
Trany fluid and filter change.
Possibly a power tuner?
Sit back and be ready waiting for that light one foot on the gas and one on the brake rev'ed!

Lock it into 4 wheel drive (HIGH) and lower your tire pressure to 25lbs of pressure.
Bring a helmet.. most tracks won't let you run without one... you can get away with out a 5-point if you're not running 12's (which .. you .. won't .. be) but you gotta have a helmet.
keep both hands on the wheel...
keep your back pressed against the seat and your head against the head-rest. When you launch, esp at RPM, then you *WILL* be thrown back. This is especially true in our D's with 4x4 locked in. By keeping your body braced, then you are less likely to lose control and keep the D straight. After all, the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line.. if you get squirrely , you're gonna lose.

I may not have time for a plug change (Never done it on a "D"
Fuel I can handle
K&N Im getting Sat.
Tranny Fluid I dont have time to do Before Sun.
No $$$ for a Power Tuner

Ok if you do this simple like pre K simple adjustment you will notice better acceleration in every gear. http://www.v8performance.com/tipsandtricks.htm#TPS_Mod
Now I really suggest you take off and clean the Throttle body and clean the IAC selonoid.
Use synthetic oil. this will free 2 or 3 horse power. I use Q power 4x4. man that's some good ****

Lock it into 4wd High... that way all 4 tires have power. No wheel spin and incredibly hard launches.
I've seen a Eagle Talon beat a Corvette ZR1 off the line simply because they were able to get the hole shot by having better traction.

Just as long as you're not making turns with the 4wd locked in you won't hurt anything. Lock it in before you you get to the line and disengage after you cross the finish line. I have had good results revving to about 1000 rpm's with my foot on the brake but just be careful with it as this will heat up the tranny fluid and if you do it too much/too long you will burn up your torque converter.

I think Im gonna just keep it in 2wd. I dont wanna hurt anything since my wife will kick my *** if I do. Were doin it all in fun anyways. I took all the extra weight out today, even took the roof rack off. Im going tom. to get my K&N and get an oil change. Also getting some octane booster and some 93 octane. Anyone had good results with any particular octane booster? I was thinking Outlaw.....
