Default ? on 98 Durango

hey all,

Just wanted to run this past you all and to see if you think this would be a good buy. This would not be a daily driver.

Anyways a neighbor has a 98 Durango with the 5.9l with 312,000 miles on it and said i could have it for $100. I've driven this a few times the engine is strong and body is is good shape, only problems is the front ball joints need to be replace again(was done last year some time) and the tranny slips from first to 2nd gear at times.

My idea is to take this and lift it to use around the farm, have fun with it in mud and use it during the winter .

Thanks in advance, anything i should check on this. I work on all my own vehicles and tractors so working on will not be a problem.

My personal opinion is that paying $100 for ANYTHING that actually runs, is a good deal. Add to that the fact that you have an idea of a few things that need to be done to it already and that makes it sweeter. Add to that the fact that you just want to beat this thing up on your farm...why haven't you bought it already?

Adjust the rear band in the pan for the 1 to 2 shift and also the outer band near the shiftercable and detent cable area on the driver side of the tranny=read the thread "adjusting tranny bands hot or cold"=then make sure you check all the fluids aka transfer and diffs.Try greasing the ball joint first =IF that don't work=replace it and the shock=I bet the joint got replaced but the shock didn't= I noticed torsion setups ride sweet but they take a beating with bad shocks....Get ya self some chevy lowering shackles=there's a thread on tbe belltech=I've seen energy suspension ones for 40.00 bucks at pep boys.then crank up the torsion bars in the back and adjust your tie rods....I'd throw alil cash into the d ya might be able to sell it for a profit later=they seem pretty tough...hell a 100 bucks I buy it in a nyy min!

Thanks for the info guys.

The only thing that i was worried about was the milage, eventhough would mostly be just a drive around farm truck, would also be used at times during the winter.

But if that doesn't seem like an issue then i will go over today and pick it up,

Thanks again

Well i bought this. Didnt' bring home yet will tomorrow. I was told wrong on this. its a 5.2l and it's not 300k + miles. but 168k i almost feel bad taking this for $100

I took my scanner and it has 3 error codes. a 141 and 138 ( thinking this is just getting new o2 sensors) and a 720 speed senor error. looking into that one now.
