Removing catalytic converter on 98?

I lived in TN just outside of Nashville and had no cats and no problems getting registered and no one else I knew had any problem in counties with emissions as long as they had a shell on the pipe. A car can still pass emissions with mods without a cat in place.

all these negative nancys...if you wanna remove your cat just do it....i dont make my truck louder/quieter to please everybody else, i do it because its the way I want it, who cares what everybody else thinks....maybe its a redneck thing

OMG dont you even start with tree hugging global warming bull****. because in that subject i will shut everyone up. So lets start with a simple Question. What comes out of your exhaust system? Carbon Dioxide! what do trees take in to produce Oxygen? Carbon Dioxide! The more trees that are planted the better the environment will be. Lets not all Believe All Douch bag Gore please.

I don't have a problem with loud if it's a good sounding loud, and not obnoxious and annoying. I wouldn't do it on a vehicle I drive every day as it's nice to be able to drive somewhere and not have to worry about waking anybody up or whatever.
As everyone has said, there are no performance gains w/o the converter, so it's really a waste of money and time to remove. If you want it decently loud but not ear piercing, go with a Flowmaster 40. That's probably the loudest you'll get.
As far as emissions.. a modern vehicle, even without converters still produces less harmful exhaust gasses than say, an aircraft piston engine running 100 octane leaded fuel.
