Do these things really work. Not really looking so much for power gain, looking more for better fuel ecom. Or what is the best thing todo for better mileage?

nope, the computer is smart enough to figure out that it is there over time it will compensate and you will have yourself a very nice paperweight and nothing more
get a superchips or similar tuner

Like shrp said, 2 weeks from now it's going to be nothing more than a $25 paper weight. If you want real performance mod you'll have to be willing to spend some more money and have a real tune, not some plug n play crap.
Also, what engine do you have because there's many other options to increase fuel economy, and to be honest a plug n play chip like that isn't going to give you any fuel economy boost even though it claims it does. +4 MPGs sounds a bit fishy anyways for a $25 chip, they're telling me for $25 I can get the same fuel economy performance as my $300 tuner... rightttt...

Yeah there are so many ways to improve gas mileage on the 5.9 than some other chip. On a personal note, I too have the 5.9 and can vouch that the SuperChips programmer helped me out with around 4 or 5 MPGs. This is a complete tune programmer rather than just a chip that fools the computer.
Like shrp said earlier, the computer will just realize it's being fooled and overcompensate and you'll end up with a bit of a problem on your hands. I fell prey to buying the Jet Chip stage 2 and ended up replacing my PCM.
It ended up that after 3 months of using it I felt like I was back to barebone stock and no magic MPG improvements. I took the chip off and my truck wouldn't even run right it had a horrible idle and took 5 resets and about 2 weeks of putting up with it's sluggish running.
I tow every day so this is the reason I had to buy a new PCM. Just the fact it's just a piggy back chip that goes on the computer itself should send a red flag. The SuperChips plugs into your OBD-II port and tunes the computer rather than tricking it.
I'm rambling on so simply put just either get a programmer or let off the gas. This is the best way to save MPGs from what I've found.

Do you have any mods done or just bone stock? I put an Airaid cai and a throttle body spacer on mine and gained 5 mpg. Alot of people say the tb spacer is a waste and they could be right. I did both at the same time so I don't know which did what on my gain. I also have the 98 with the 5.9

no chance in hell you gained 5 miles per gallon by adding a cai and no chance you gained anything by adding a tbspacer

Yes they are just a waste. I had a throttle body spacer as one of the first mods I did and just did that solo and didn't see any improvement at all. Not even a slight bit of HP improvement on the dyno, and yes I did get it dyno tested. There was no torque improvement or anything and calculated mileage on every fill up for 2 months and nothing improved at all.
To me after 3 months, if there's no improvement it's just a snake oil myth, so I took it off and sold it on eBay for $60. The CAI I can believe improving gas mileage however. I did my CAI (spectre custom did prior to my K&N) and I didn't notice quite 5 MPG but I did notice a very noticeable increase, maybe like 2 or 3 MPGs.
