I would be able to get it at a discount from a local parts place here along with the oil was wondering if they were worth their salt or should I just stick with the fram filters.

 

i agree with hydra i have been using purolator filters on mine (ok powerflo branded, but thats just a rebranded high end purolator)

also fram does NOT make a very good filter and you will never catch me using one unless its that or nothing (they are better than nothing, but thats about it)

Well I have to do a change this weekend. Recommend the reg Mobil 1, extended protection or high mileage. My D has nearly 190K on it

 

Oil change today and waiting to see the results so with 3k or 5k or stick with 3 months

 

My G/F has a 2000 durango 4.7 slt 4wd and for about 3 months now i have been getting the blue smoke on cold starts and when accelerating from stop lights and such which is probably from the valve stem seals. Well i called to get quotes to fix this and i know that is can be repaired without removing the heads.

I called the dodge dealership and they quoted me $1300-$1500 and they said they had to remove the head because it probably wasant the seals alone it was probably sludge so i called a machine shop that was recomended by a "friend" they gave me 2 quotes.

If they didnt remove the head i would have to buy a new timing kit ($520) + $600 for other parts and labor or they could remove the heads and do it for about $800

well i dont have money for either right now and iam unsure but i think it might be BS about having to get a timing kit.

So i took the car for an oil change and my g/f has been using havoline i belive but i took it and had valvoline high mileage synth blend put in. I guess what iam trying to do is prolong having the get the seals fixed till the end of the year and was wondering if i could switch to mobil 1 since i have heard so much good stuff about it.

Also after switching to the valvoline the blue smoke has compleatly gone even after a cold start when the car has sat overnight.

also like to add the guy at the machine shop said he couldnt warranty his work because those engines were basically crap!

 

Only people that i have seen in my experiances with problems or calling the 4.7 "Crap" where people that didn't properly maintain there engine....

Yes. Actually, if you don't have any leaks or do any heavy pulling, you could probably get away with 5k with dino oil (personal opinion of course). Personally, I do 5k intervals with Mobile-1 10W-30 with a Mobile -1 oil filter.

 

actually if you read the owners manual (at least my 2002 owners manual) they tell you to change the oil every 6000 or 75000 miles on dino oil, i change my oil (i have the 4.7) ever 5k miles with dino oil, and since it is less than the factory recommended change interval i expect to be just fine, as stated as long as you change the oil and filter together and do it regularly with a good quality oil, and change it at least as frequently as the owners manual suggests you will be fine.
