remember bad connections cause heat, if you are having problems with relays and resisters , make sure the connections are clean and making good contact before plugging it back in. also if the blower motor is drawing to many amps it will also cause the wires to heat up. do you run your blower on high all the time. another thing to check is body and frame grounds. they need to be clean and in good working order, bad grounds can cause lots of problems in a vehicle with all the stuff we have on them these days...dielectric grease is your friend on any connection, every time you unplug a wire put some in the plug...hope this helps a little.

Hi there. Have a 2001 Durango R/T. Yesterday I warmed it up before heading out, was about 30 here in CT. Got in, turned the front fan to max, about 2 seconds later it just stopped. Won't blow low or high like some others have had, it just stopped completely.

Figure I should try the new blower motor resistor, unless this sounds like something else? That part sounds like an easy fix so hoping that is all it is. Is this a part I can get at say Autozone? I read somewhere that is was dealer only but that was years ago and putting in my truck info, Autozone lists some resistors for my truck...and does the brand matter etc?

Sorry to hijack, figured I'd post here instead of making a new thread for this issue. Thanks.

you can try the resistor, but the fan suddenly going out like that sounds more to me like a fan or connection issue (the resistor is sold elsewhere besides the dealer, however i would just spend the $15 at the dealer to get it personally)

however for the low cost of the resistor it might be worth it to try replacing it and see what happens.

you can also try to jump power to the fan and see if it comes on, if so you have your diagnosis

I did get a new resistor today. I plugged it in and the fan works again. Only problem is there was some melt on one prong on the resistor and some on the housing (plug or whatever the technical term is).

Going to keep an eye on it but probably a good idea to replace the plug as well.

Thanks much for the reply shrpshtr325 =)

Resistor just blew again tonight, at least it was a balmy 24 degrees when I got out of work!

Going to try to replace the harness but worried that I might need a new blower motor too. I am a gambling man though (of course I usually lose lol).

Best bet is to just replace it all. I gambled around with it for a year or so. Replaced harness and resistor...lasted about 6 months then i started going thru resistors every few months until i finally replaced it all. Its been good for three months now. Hope it lasts longer than last time

I put in the new harness and resistor in last week so if it does go again, I will just replace all 3. The resistor and harness repair kit were pretty cheap on Amazon so it's worth one more gamble.

Which kit?

This one:
Amazon Amazon

Or this one:
Amazon Amazon

I had my mechanic fix this issue last year but it only lasted a month so any further repairs will be DIY. I'm handy but this is a little new to me. Any advice or good reference material?

I used the first link you posted:
Chrysler Blower Resistor Harness Repair Kit 5017124AB
for $22.99. Funny thing was I have Amazon Prime but this was not under that shipping benefit, but it came in 2 days after ordering (along with the resistor that was Prime and another item I ordered). I did have to pay the shipping though.

The resistor was only like $12 which was WAY cheaper than what I payed at Autozone.

It works, but has only been 9 days so far. I will post if it blows again for sure.

I sort of used this info:

You only need 5 wires, two of the bigger gauge and three of the smaller

pins 1 pink wire, pin two green wire, pin 3 light bleu, pin 4 bleu/yellow pin 5 brown/balck

My new set of wires came with a connector at one end, I had to remove the cap from teh black female connector and a white rubber band. passing all 5 wirers threww the cap and rubber band and replacing the cap.

With wires now in the connector I spliced the other end to the cut wires underneath the dash with the supplied shrink wrap tubs.

Only thing was it didn't come with the shrink tubes so either have your own or tape em up. One end of the wires have connectors and they only go in one way to the harness (once apart) and will snap in once locked. Some might need to be pushed in with a tiny screw driver or whatever but they should snap in.
