Default engine codes

this morning while driving home from work my check engine light came on. i had a friend stop over with his code reader and 2 codes popped up. i wrote them down and went inside to go online and check em out, and my friend went home. i had my 10 month old son in the den with me while i was getting the computer turned on and i lurned away for 1 minut. and he literally ate the peice of paper that i had written the codes on. so i cant look em up. im pretty sure my codes were for the o2 sensor and or my throtle position sensor. anyone know what the codes are for those 2. cuz if i saw the code i would be able to remember the number by seeing em. thanks.
also on my drivers side manifold the middle 2 exaust ports have blown out my gasket. if it is a o2 sensor code could that be caused of the manifold gasket being bad and leaking fumes. as in the sensor is good its just not reading the correct amount of exaust fumes cuz there excaping thru the manifold. so i would have to get the manifold gasket changed.
also if i were to take it some where how much can i expect to be charged for having the gasket changed. p.s i know the bolts are going to break and possibly going to have to be removed with a e.z out.
thanks again and sorry for asking so many different questions.

krupaeric,

Try the key dance to get your codes again. With a piece of paper to write them down on, place the key in the ignition. Looking at the odometer and the mileage, turn the key on, off, on, off and on. Do not start the vehicle or turn the key far enough to engage the starter. Just to to on position. Do the on, off, on, off, on sequence in just a few seconds whereas to slow and it doesn't work.

If the 1998 D supports the key dance process, and you do it quickly and correctly, your stored engine codes will read in the odometer area. The will be in the format like this: P0470, P1025, etc. When the PCM gets to the last code and has displayed everything, the odometer will read: P DONE.

The entire process will take less than 15 seconds. There is no harm in trying it again if you don't have success from being to slow on the key roll or confused the first time through.

Let us know what your codes were.

Happy To Help,

IndyDurango

i will try it soon thank you for the advise. i never knew that you could do that to retreive codes. is it only a dodge thing or can you do it with any vehicle?
i really appreciate the help from everyone on here. i have only been a member here for a short while, everyone seems to be highly educated in auto mechanics. and its helped me a great deal.
i was unfortuniate to have gotten a d that was in such rough shape mechanically. but slowly i have been trying to restore it to it formly glory. hopefully soon ill be able to get the exaust replaced so i can truly enjoy to fruits of my labor. and the d.
thank you again. and i hope you all enjoy the days to come.

The key dance may or may not work with you but it's worth a shot. If not advance and autozone read codes for free so head up there if ya need. Once we get the codes we can help ya further

Thank you for appreciating our help. We try our hardest to give accurate information as fast as possible

Its only a dodge thing. But it also doesn't work on every year. There was two years that dodge stop doing the key cycle test. Once you have the codes, then everyone can help.

Don't assume if it doesn't work the first time, it won't work.. My 2003 D, is REAL picky about how it's done, and even then I think it likes me sitting in the seat playing with it's ignition, because even then it won't do it sometimes! :O

Kinda like my wife... gotta... nevermind

Then later, it'll get me - I'll try it and forget about it for a bit, then drive somewhere while the OD is flashing codes at me, lol - doesn't hurt anything BTW, that I'm aware of.

The key dance does not work on the 1998-1999 version of the Durango. Only 2000-2003 supports it's use.

So with that you will need to have it checked again or go to some place like Auto Zone and use theirs for free. Then buy the parts and install.

yea i tried it many different times different ways and it just didnt work. so today i went to autozone and had them read my codes. and to my surprise it was the o2 sensors. he popped the code in the computer and it spat out a bunch of reasons. mine happened to be that the manifolds are bad its causing air to be sucked in thru the exaust causing it to read lean, so thats why im only getting about 8 to 10 mpg. and it also said that when the o2 sensors call up a code it causes the tranny to shift erraticly, and when i stomp on the gass to pass someone it doesnt down shift it just revs a little higher. lol. so i guess i just got to start buying the parts.
i figured out what all i need to buy.
tubular headers. (optional) if im gonna take the manifolds off i may as well upgrade.
my (y) pipe is fine.
direct fit catalitic converter.
and a good muffler. (flomaster dual chamber). hehehehe.
im just going to use a 90 degree pipe to send the exaust out to the side with a down angle to direct the fumes away from the undercarage.
i may need some advise as to how to get the manifold bolts out cuz im pretty sure there going to bust off. so hopefully with me spraying them down with penitrating oil every day it will help break them loose in stead of having them break off.
