Checking valves, etc... Pics included
Okay, I have a few questions.
1. How do I go about checking if the valves/seats/guides are good? The machine shops around here are pretty high compared to what I can get a rebuilt head for.
2. What about cleaning the head/piston/throttle body etc? Lots of carbon build up and what not.
3. I need a torque wrench, but don't want to spend a ton. What's are some decent priced, but good and durable ones?
4. Felpro, are quality gaskets right? What other brands should I stick with? What about head bolts, where should I get them from?
5. I can't get the camshaft pulley off, what's the easiest way? Autozone doesn't loan out the "strap type pulley holder" that the Haynes manual recommends.

I wouldn't go no less then a craftsman torque wrench. Because this one tool you shold not skip on when rebuilding an engine. this tool here can make a difference from doing it right the first time or redoing it (and wasting more money) or scrapping a motor. I have the craftsman digiatorque.
Has far as your carbon build up you can get a cleaner in spray cans. Also useful items a steel wool and steel wire brush. If you have to use a flat blade screwdriver or a gasket scraper bevery care and not to guage the metal

1. Dont know about that one. Maybe PM AMM (all motor mike)
2. Get some Mopar combustion cleaner...works great!
3. Craftsman as mentioned.
4. Felpro gaskets and ARP head bolts.
5. Use the timing belt and a vise grip....works great!

For the torque wrench, you can get a good quality loaner tool from autozone for $100, then you get 100% back when you are done. How many miles are on it? Personally while you have it torn down, I would re-build it. So long as you know that there are no previous cracks in the head, I would just tear it down (you can get the valve spring tool from autozone too) and take engine degreaser and a wire brush in a drill to the outside about two or three times, then wire brush the combustion chamber, be careful of the valve seats. Just clean it like anything else you would clean, using brake cleaner when you are done. Then, take the valves to a wire wheel on a grinder, completely cleaning them. Then, get a lapping tool for around six bucks and some valve grinding compound and put some around each valve, then drop them in the head and put the suction cup on the valve and lap them into the seats. Then you have an *almost* reman head.

As far as rebuilding the whole engine you need to ask yourself what are you wanting to do with this (should have asked & answer youself this before you even started) but if you are going to drive it hard wanting a lot of horsepower out of it now is the time. If it just to getyou back forth to work and a easy drive a total rebuild would be more than likly waste of money and time. So ask yourself want do you want or need this thing to do.
Yeah, basically just a work, errands car. No long hauls, and btw, it's my sister's car. I'm just trying to be a GOOD brother.
And the miles are hard to tell, she says that her guess is around 180k odometer been out for a while. Which I will try to fix too. So, I can "re-grind" the valve seats with some compound? Could I get a little better description on this? Thanks in advance.
