EGR Valve
Will the EGR block-off plate hurt my MPG? After getting my car back up and running agian, it seems to be going through more gas than usual, and I am driving it nicely, too! I have noticed my wierd idle problem coming back again like it did before I cleaned the EGR valve. Just wondering if its worth doing, because I am getting tired of dealing with it, haha, and we dont have Emissions testing in my county, so thats a plus! Thanks!

RE: EGR Valve
EGR BLOCK OFF KIT. My friend who races neons has done his own, You take the back part and get a piece of aluminum cut it to the shape of the gasket, put the gasket on and the piece you created, The intake, My friend used a penny to cover it up, but you can use whatever you want, and the little vaccume hose on the throttle body you can take off and put a cap over. i hope this helps.

Here is a tip if the car is a sohc. The sohc head is the same even on the second gen cars. The second gen heads have the EGR block off from the factory. Find one in a junk yard and remove the parts you need. Just look where the EGR is supposed to be and you will see the block off plate. Make a gasket out of some quality gasket material, (Napa, O'Rielly's....) and you are in business.
I was lucky enough to find an '01 Magnum. That head comes stock with a hotter cam and beefier valve springs. The top end on these Magnum cars is how they made the sohc Magnum pull the 150 hp off the showroom floor. Saddly enough, this meant the end of the 2.0 dohc for the NEON.
Anyway, I did alot of information gathering on this before I did my '98 sohc, and what a difference it made. I did a mild port and polish job, cleaned up the castings, knife edged the intake and exhaust ports leaving the guides untouched, and let the machine shop do a good valve job, and I was really impressed. The complete head cost me $75 out of the junk yard. $15 for the machine shop to give it a bath. About $50 for the materials to do the P&P. $90 for the machine shop to pressure test and do the valve job. About 4-6 hours of my time to do the P&P job. Everything for less than $250.
Also finding the Magnum head allowed me to still drive the car while prepping the head. The car was only down one Saturday afternoon. Hope this helps you out.
