Default A/C pulling down engine

When I use the A/C it really pulls the heck out of the engine. There is a noticeable difference in performance and power. It is also much slower to start. Is that normal in a 1982 D150 with a 318 and single barrel carb?

I have driven it 3500 miles now after tune up, new carb, A/C conversion. I recall the mechanic saying the A/C was a little noisy but working ok.

It cools the truck but it isnt freezing anybody out!

Thanks.

single barrel carb? are you sure its not a 2 barrel carb. if it was a singel barrel carb that would be your problem. in 82 those 318 trucks came with 2 or 4 barrel carbs.

if you had the proper 2 barrel carb you would not get that pulling.

You need the correct carb, it should be a 2 barrel and also check to see if your ac solenoid on the carb is activating to up the idle.

I agree. I had a two barrel, rebuilt from oreillys, he said he couldnt get the choke set right so he put on a single barrel without asking. I wanted a four barrel and he told me about the intake, gas mileage, etc. blah, blah, blah.

if he can't set the choke i wouldn't consider him much of a mechanic. i would tell him to put the 2 barrel on so that you can take it to a real mechanic.
