8.5 mpg sucks.
check the timing and valve lash. And check to see if the new carb is jetted exactly the same as the old one.

Is that a 2bbl or a 4bbl carb?

I have an 87 D-100 with a 318 and what i *think* is the 727, not sure. All bone stock, and well maintained. Single cab-short bed, 2wd.

I get 14mpg combined. So probably like 17mpg on the highway? Something close to that anyway.

That is good for an auto with a carb. My 1974 Chevy with a 4 speed and 350 4x2 3/4 ton only gets 18 on the freeway and about 16 combined.

i got to say if it has a 1 bbl carb then someone has replace the carb or you are assuming it is a 1 bbl carb. i think the only engine to run a 1 bbl carb was the slant 6
