Question Front Mount Hitch

Okay on a previous post it was suggested that I get a front mount hitch. Great, sold on the idea but I can't find a manufacturer for a 1991 D150. Anyone using one or know of a vendor that carries one for our trucks?

As for a hitch in the back, I really like the CURT model 14001. Anyone using another brand that they recommend?

Outside of a tow hook on the front receiver, anyone mount some on the front of their truck. Pics would be great, because I'm looking for some attachment points. Got a few ideas from the 1st Gen Durangos on this forum but no hits from our trucks. This is the type I'm looking at.

Or maybe some D-rings?

Sorry, but I really like to STUFF these threads... LOL.
Thanks everyone!

The rear hitch has the same specs as mine and is of the same construction but mine is a Reese. I had those same hooks on the front before I got my snow plow. The plow mount gives me attachment points without the hooks. I also mounted my receiver to the plow mount.

Hey SEAL,

So I looked under my truck today to check for clearance issues since there were notes on all the hitches they sold about the spare tire carrier. The large hole at the back of the frame on the passenger side is used for the spare tire carrier J-bolt and is also used for the hitch. Did your REESE have any issues with this? I also noted that my exhaust might interfere with the front bolt hole on the hitch depending on the taper of the bracket. With a Class III, I might not have this issue (shorter bracket). Funny thing is that the Class III's are more expensive.

The CURT, DRAWTITE, and HIDDEN HITCH in class III, IV, and V all had this note. Has anyone "adjusted" the spare tire carrier to work with one of these hitches?

BTW, shouldn't need a snow plow since it's only snowed here twice in 25 years. Then the whole city closed down and it melted the same day.

I can't answer about the spare tire as I only put mine in the bed when I go on trips, otherwise it sits in my basement. I have never ever needed a spare tire for my truck since it rolled off the show room floor. (knock on wood) The hitch was on the truck from the dealer. I would suspect there was an interference problem because when we picked up the truck from the dealer the tire and tire carrier were laying in the back of the bed.

PS. If I don't move the snow we couldn't leave the house for weeks or even months at a time.

Interesting find while under the vehicle. I found 2 small tags on the rear axle that I somehow missed before. The one at the bottom of the axle had 3250 and one a little left of the top had 3.5 stamped on it. I wonder if the 3.5 is for 3.55 gear ratio or am I just hoping. Could the other be a part number?

I don't see a way around removing the spare. Looks like the square tube might hit the spare tire itself. Maybe I could just chain it to the front bumper.... JK

Yeeeeep, I'm liking that answer Aje. Thanks!

I might have found several alternatives for the hitch dilema with the spare tire. There's a plate that CURT makes that bolts under the step bumper. I did some measurements and the 2 large holes line up 8" apart but the smaller ones will need to be drilled and it is pretty thick with 2 layers of steel. There is a metal plate that supports the hitch ball attachment point that has an upturned lip that would need to be trimmed with a cutting wheel or use some spacers. I like this one best for the rear hitch for the ease of installation and price.

The second alternative might work for the back. It requires welding. Maybe to the bottom of the step bumper or use the frame brackets.

Lastly, this one looks best for a front hitch. The frame brackets have either 7" or 16" drop.

What do you think?

hey sixgun,
it may take some fabrication, but if you dont mind a sq.hole in your front bumper, you probably mount a piece of 2in.sq. tube frome frame to frame behind the bumper with a slight drop and cut a sq. hole in the center of the bumper for the sq.reciever tube to stick out slightly. it would come out where the license plate is,just mount the plate down a little lower.
it will look like stock,be hidden.
i dont know how much fabrication you want to go through, just my thoughts, so many options?? good luck with it. thank you

I wouldn't give a nickel for the first two options. Option three would depend on how good a welder you are. For option four, are you going to weld it in or use the side mount kit sold separately. If you are going to use these to mount a mobile winch be sure you have adequate clearance before you weld since it will quickly become unchangeable.

Rear Hitch found at Valley Hitch that has a spare tire mounting bracket included with their hitch. It looks so simple that I'm surprised no other vendor has it. Costs a few bucks more than some but less than others at just over 2 bills with free shipping. They carry several that work around the spare tire but this one extends past the frame and is curved a bit where most just drop down at the end of the frame. This may work best for me and BEST of all, this company is in Dallas, TX.
The model number is VA81090:

As far as the front hitch, looks like some welding is in order. Looks like I need to drop into a few trailer or truck shops around town and get some options as well. I first need to wait until I get the suspension done so I know where it sits exactly. I ordered the front coils last week from Coil Spring Specialties. It will take a couple of weeks to make and ship them. +2" in ride height and +15% in articulation. The Rancho add-a-leaf arrived already and looks strong and well made with pads at the end of each leaf and good instructions. My ProComp set didn't have either of these. Still waiting for the longer U-bolts to arrive any day now. Unfortunately, welding is not my thing. Theres a guy that runs a shop here local that does all kinds of fabrication specifically for racing. The owner is real down to earth and wrote me back personally about a project I was wanting to do before. He told me that he has owned 6 Dodge trucks over the years and he'd be really interested in helping me out. I've been wanting to give him some business and this may be it. Comes highly recommended here on some local sites.
