Well I have the key switch power coming from the fuse block then teeing off and one going to the vr and one going to the alternator and the green field wire going from alternator to the vr.Is that right?

Do you have a manual for your truck? I had the same problem with my 85 d350 dually and i replaced the alternator, voltage reg, still no charge, had alt tested ok, so I went thru the complete test procedure in the factory manual, found the new vr was bad. When it was replaced it was charging. I can e mail you the test pages from my book it you need them

So you have voltage running to the alt in more than one place? If so that may be your problem. The voltage to the alt should only be at the large bolt on the back of the alt. The 2 field current wires go to the reg with an ignition pos to the top pole of the reg.
