Carburetor throttle shaft leaking.
I have 1984 dodge w-150 318 . The carb is remaned by auto line. Its a carter 2 bbl. The idle is rough. And I spray the throttle plate were the throttle shaft is and the idle shoots up 200 rpm and smooths out . Auto zone tells me the throttle shaft will never seal up completely but I think its B,S. what do u guys think . I have already put a new base gasket on and made sure all screws are thight.
what do you mean by throttle plate? if you are spraying the side of the carb and it smooths out then i think there may be an issue with the carb. if your spraying it down the throat of the carb and it smooths out is could just need to be tuned. have you adjusted the carb since it was installed on the engine? the rebuilders can set it up so that it will run and be setup close to where it needs to be but you still need to fine tune it once you have it installed on the engine.
On the side . Im having autozone give me a new one. So I hope the throttle shaft is better sealed than this one. To fine tune it u stick the vacum gauge on the brake booster line and it should be pulling about 17 inch of vacum correct.
you don't need a vacuum gauge to fine tune it. get the engine up to operating temp and then adjusting left and right idle mixture screws equally until you get your engine idling as high as you can. then adjust the idle stop screw screw to bring the idle down. you can also use a vacuum gauge if you want. with a vacuum gauge you are looking to get the highest vacuum reading you can. my truck pulls about 20-22 in-hg while in park or neutral about 16-18 in-hg while in gear

years ago i rigged up a way to put a bronze bushing in the carb body to tighten up the shaft. it can be done, but if you are not machinist you can rune the casting very fast. the trick is to not bore a counterbore in to the throttle core.

Yes it can be done and back in the day before fuel injection (and the Internet) some carb re-build shops would do this but all of the shops that I used to work with went out of business years ago.
Auto zone ordered me a new carb hopefully this shaft is tighter. And I have seen those kits on the internet . If this carb does the same thing I might take my top end apart and make sure the valves are opening and closing ,sealing properly. If I get to the bottom of it ill post about it . Thanks guys
