Default Stall out in reverse. 88 2wd 318

Hey, I have a 1988 Dodge 2wd pick up with a 3 speed automatic and the 318. It’s a no overdrive version. It drives perfect and looks great. It has a completely overhauled tranny and newly fabricated TC. When you put it into reverse without holding the gas it will jerk and die. It’s done this since before changing the tranny. Any ideas? Thanks

Locking torque converter? Was the TCC solenoid replaced in the rebuild?

does a bit more throttle when in reverse keep it going? i would wonder if the idle speed needs some tweeking or maybe the idle speed motor is a bit slow.

It actually does. As long as you give it a little extra gas it works

Will it stay running once you get into reverse, if you let off the gas? If it will, what does it idle at?

It will, I haven’t checked exactly but it’s pretty low. Maybe just adjust the idle up? Even if not a permanent fix it could be good in the mean time

don't just go and try to turn the idle up. it is not that simple. there is a whole procedure to make sure it is adjusted properly. also the idle control motors are know for going bad or getting slow with age. might be worth opening it up and cleaning/re greasing it.
