Front locking hub conversion
Hi everyone. I have a 93, W250, 5.9 magnum with a Dana 44 front axle with the dust covers on the hubs. I'm wanting to know if anyone offers a kit to convert the hubs to lockouts. I'm trying to improve the gas mileage. Thank you!

You will spend more doing the conversion, than you will ever save on gas.......
That said, ford front end parts from late 80s early 90's trucks would have 99% of the parts you need. Of course, that would mean you would have to buy brake pads for the ford parts..... At one time, various folks made kits for the conversion, but, they were all well north of 1000 bucks.....

there are tons of kits available. they are usually about $100. there is not really much work to the conversion.
you may not save on gas but you do on wear and tear on parts like the universal joints. they are not very fun to replace.

behind that cover there is a big solid gear that connects the hub to the axle shaft and this replaces it. heck it will probably take you longer to remove the axle caps than it will take you to install the locking hubs. you just have to pull the snap ring, remove the old gear, install the new stuff, install a snap ring and then put the new cap and screws in.

Does he have unit bearings in front? Or is it the old style, used on the trucks with the 203 transfer case? If he has the rebuildable fellers, then yeah, pull the dust cover, the existing drive 'gear' inside there, and bolt the new hubs on..... (I am too used to the 2nd gens....
