alot of people who do v8 swaps still use the 42re, it's pretty strong. you would more than likely blow the rear before the trans. just make sure your trans fluid is at the proper level and clean, it should be fine.

I have the 8.25 rear, and I know they put these with the v8's so I think it will be okay. I know someone running a hemi with the 8.25 rear, and it's still holding up (about 400 hp at the crank.)
This all depends if I sell the truck or not, if I don't I am going to make this thing sweet. SAS(dana 60 and 44), 5.9L magnum, new tranny (46re built to the max), Lift (8-9 inches), and 35+ size tires. It would be a hog off road!

I really like my Dakota, good size and enough room and handles about what I can give it. Ofcourse 4WD would be great but I really wouldn't use it that much. I was curious about the V6 to V8 conversion. Is it pretty simple to upgrade to the V8 or is their a lot of labor and trouble in the conversion?

yea, the 8.25 is pretty strong. alot of people get into trouble with them when they are pushing enough power to need slicks at the track. I've seen a couple videos where when the rear just completely blows at launch. When you're putting down alot of power and are able to get it to the ground without slipping, you will need a better rear but i wouldnt worry about it. I have also heard about alot of 9.25 rears blowing too, in my opinion the 8.25 is just as strong.
