Default Cold Air Intake Question

I have a 2002 Dakota 3.9l 4x4 single cab 5 speed manual. I was wanting to put a new intake on the truck, but after reading alot of reviews from different products, i wasnt too sure which to go with. So if anyone has any advice on which intake provided the best experience for them, I would really appreciate it.

A lot of people will tell you to make your own. It is easy and can be done for cheap. I luckily came across a deal on craigslist for a K&N system for my truck and it's been great. K&N is one of, if not the best out there. A lot of people will tell you it also depends on what kind of set up you want too. The single? Double?

Hey man i just put a cold air intake in my 4.7l 4x4 durango slt+ which is a 2002 so similar to yours and yeah with all the research i did i found that they are all pretty mcuh the same. I put the spectre build it yourself kit in my durango and got a 1.1 mpg increase and thats all city driving/stop and go driving. So in a 3.9l you'll probably get atleast 2 mpg city and 4-5 highway. It cost me 80 dollars to build my kit and i got all my parts at oreily auto parts but you can also find it at autozone for roughly the saem price. All i know is dont buy something that cost over 100 bucks because you dont need to spend that much lol unless its a "REALLY" well known good brand and they all are these days

I took this picture with my phone so its not great quality but you get the picture i hope!

ok thank you for all the information. Im getting around 16 mpg right now, most of my driving is highway, i want something that will be reliable, increase mileage and power. I know to not expect a lot of gains.

99.99% of the time, if you are buying a CAI for improved MPG, you are wasting your time.

It depends on how restrictive your setup is now on your stock intake I know my buddy did a cai on his 03 grand cherokee they are really restrictive and he gained 1mpg city and 2mpg highway which if you figure over a tank of gas thats 40 extra miles. Daks arent to bad with the setup but a cai on them can make a world of difference on throttle response and can gain you a little bit of mpg but not very much.

99.99% of the time, your stock box will not hurt max MPPGs it will hurt max HP if it is restrictive.

I also used the Spectre "Build it yourself" intake on my 2001 3.9 dakota. ended up costing about $65 dollars. then I wrapped the whole thing in air intake heat shield. autozone or adavanced auto carry it.

i made my own intake, total cost was $30 then i painted w/ ceramic engine paint.
i had a thread about it like a month ago, but heres a quick pic. i put the bottom
half of the airbox in after a trip thru the mud and now it keeps the filter clean.
