Either way; my Dynomax 17219 made a huge difference, for me, for the better.

I have a V6. You CAN get get it to sound better - deep/tonal/more-menacing but you will never have it sound like a V8. I promise you this.
I do a lot of work on my truck at my uncle's garage - his 100% stock 2000 V8 Dakota 4x4 club-cab is in the other bay.

I'm not trying to insulting, I'm just trying to save you some cash and your sanity.

I will go to dynomax site later on and check this part number but off hand do u remember which dynomax this is? turbo sport ect? thanks

i put a flowmaster super 44 on my dakota along with a magnaflow hi flow cat and a resonator tip and the muffler is loud! sounds great at low rpms but at hi rpms it sounds like a ricer and is really really pissing me off. I cant stand that ricer wine. I need to do something to get this to sound alot better. any suggestions on different mufflers that would make the v6 sound better? I believe I put a super 40 on my jeep and it didnt rice anywhere near as much. Any suggestions would be awesome. thanks guys

Meh to me straight pipes on the 3.9 sound like garbage, way to crackly and gross sounding. Youtube it, it will give you somewhat of an idear what it will sound like. That being said some people like it, its all a matter of opinions.

+1 for the Dynamax muffler. On a another Dakota forum several years ago I read an extensive thread that said that the stock exhaust pipe size was adequalte for the 3.9 and the best improvement (and bang for the buck) was to just replace the restrictive muffler. I bought mine off the internet and $25 later you're driving out of the muffler shop with a nice sound. Add a stainless steel exhaust tip for a custom look and you've got a nice exhaust system.

I run flowmaster 40 cat back, cut right after the muffler and welded on an drop top facing the ground. Sounds so good, and im the kind of person who is picky about sound. Cuz i wanted it to sound like a v8. My dad is jealous cuz it sounds better then his chevy silverado v8 with a 496! Hahah

I started with taking my cat off since it was giving me codes anyways, about 2 months ago I got a flowmaster 40 and just love it. At 2-3k it has a nice mellow deep sound and when you put your foot in it, then it has the crackly ricer sound. It also has the nice rumble to it when it is at idle

I dont know about the Flowmaster 40 sounding like a ricer.. my truck has a 5.2L with MagnaFlow Cat, and a Flowmaster 40 series.. sounds really aggressive at low RPM (I get some awkward moments when a high performance car is sitting next to me at a light.. and when you get on it.. sounds like an old CUDA launching.. very nice sound.. no rice here..
