Default F&R Diff and Transfer Case fluids

2004 Dakota SLT Auto tranny.

My neighbor is taking my truck to school to do some work on it (front u joint) and he is going to do some fluids too.

I recently got the truck so I need to know what fluids to use, and weight. and how much each takes

Front Diff
Rear Diff
Transfer Case

Also, do I need to pick up any rtv sealant?

i would check this out https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-download.html

for your case id click the 2004 FSM.. it will tell you what fluids and how much is required. it will take a little browsing, but its worth it. i have a copy for my 2000 dak, and it has been a VERY VALUABLE resource..

for the seals on the diff's yes, its a good idea.

your fluids are as follows.......

PER THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL....

FRONT DIFF and REAR DIFF... SAE 75W-90 multipourpose type , GL-5 Gear Lubricant... VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LIMITED SLIP REQUIRE MOPAR LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE. 4oz EVERY FLUID CHANGED, MIXED WITH GEAR LUBE

REAR END FLUID IF USED FOR TOWING ONLY, 75W-140 SYNTHETIC

TRANSFER CASE... MOPAR ATF+4 AUTO TRANS FLUID

MANUAL DIDN'T SPECIFY THE CAPACITIES.

does it have to be mopar atf-4? Can I use a different brand ATF-4?

I wasnt sure if these were like hondas with their tranny fluid. Where Mopar is the best for it.

i would never buy fluids from a stealership.... can usually get the mopar fluids at advance auto parts, autozone, or similar stores, and for much cheaper, and its the same ****....

and with 235k on my trans, im using a bout 2 quarts lucas and 8 quarts atf

gear oil, i change every year and use and i belive its 75w-90 like yours (i dont have my maintance chart in front of me)

as for the gasket, i do belive they make one, but its good practice to use rtv with the gasket, apply it midway between generously and liberally

Now I would tell you to spend the extra 5 bucks and get the gaskets and don't turn back.

I just did both difs and yes 75w90 is what you want, also if you have an LSD make sure to put in the additive.

Problem with RTV is that it is an absolute pain in the *** to get off. Its easy to get it off the cover, just use a wire wheel but when its on the actually housing you dont wanna send crap flying.

I would use the gasket, and put a couple dabs of RTV or gasket sealant on the cover, then apply the gasket, and finally bolt it up to your difs.
