Well I got the mobile mechanic tO come over and he says it's the water pump and $400 total. Going to do the thermostat too. I told him to inspect the cover while he is in there.

Is $400 decent for mobile work? I don't really have time to tow it to a shop then have to go get it again after, he's doing it while I'm at work so that's convenient .

I don't know about a 4.7 but when I replaced the water pump in my truck I only paid about $150.00 total for all of the parts and I did the work myself. Parts were kind of expensive because I had to get two of them at the Dodge dealer and I replaced my lower radiator hose, upper radiator hose/coolant fill neck assembly and the bypass hose while I was at it.

If a 4.7 has a bypass hose it is good to replace that while the water pump is off, and if there are a lot of miles on the truck it would be very good to be proactive and replace the radiator hoses too. You or the mechanic may have to cut the old ones off to remove them anyway and it is just good preventative maintenance to replace the hoses during the course of the water pump replacement.

Do a real good coolant flush and examine what drains out of the block and radiator, check to see it is only coolant and not coolant with oil in it. It would also be a good idea to change the oil now and then change it again in maybe 200 miles just to be sure there is no problem with coolant in the oil. I would also drain, flush and refill the coolant in about 200 miles too, just as a preventative measure. As Dan and Magnet said, inspect the timing cover for any damage and replace it if needed.

If it were my truck I would replace the serpentine belt tensioner too, the tensioner and the water pump both have about the same life expectancy, and replace the belt too because you may never get all of the old coolant/oil off of the old belt and that will cause bad belt slipping and squealing. While the belt is off check all of the other pulleys for any roughness or sideways play and replace if needed.

You can find the directions for all of these things here and other sites online, plus a Haynes Manual will have detailed directions for it too. Personally I would not ever pay someone else to do this job, if you have the tools and mechanical aptitude it should not be very difficult.

Just my 2 cents on it.

Jimmy

Well it's done already. He says it is fine now.

By the time I'm off work it's dark and cold in Calgary ... And need the truck for quading Saturday .

The pump is about $65 at rockauto maybe $20 for extras if that

DIY=$100 at the most 2 or 3 hours work at best

$400 for mobile Mec

But if not inclined to do the work best bet is mobile Mec

I would rather save the $300 in labor as its such an easy fix you dont need the clutch fan anyway get ride of it next summer you could put it back on.

Sounds like it was just antifreeze you saw then, not oil.

Glad it's fixed.
