Anti-freeze
Been studying up to flush and replace in both our Chevy and Dodge trucks. the Chevy takes the OAT and the Dodge takes the HOAT. Everybody stocks the Dex-Cool for OAT and nobody stocks the Zerex for HOAT. They tell me to use the Prestone compatible for everything....
Is there really 1 compatible for all, or do I need to find the specific HOAT for my Dakota?
Thanks...

I just use the plain old green antifreeze in my truck. I mixed it about 50/50 with distilled water. The only place I could find it was at Auto Zone. They sell an Auto Zone brand of antifreeze that is straight antifreeze, not the pre-mix 50/50 or the "universal works with all types" of antifreeze. I have no faith in the universal type at all.
Sorry I don't know anything about the Chevy antifreeze.

I have no faith in the "universal" types either.
If you can't find the Zerex, flush the system well, use a flush kit, and refill with your basic green antifreeze.
Don't use Dex-Cool in your Dodge. GM has enough problems using it in their own vehicles.

I found it, just have to drive to get it. A little out of the way, but well worth using what is specified. I've ready a ton of threads all over the web... staying with G05.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
Called the closest auto parts back on the trans filter and asked again on the G05. Guy says they had 8 gallons of it and how many did he need to hold..... $330 later, enough supplies to change fluids in both our trucks.
Go figure...

Yeah, worth the drive.
I used it with distilled water to change mine out. Its a bit hard to get the old fluid out of the system without taking off the lower radiator hose.

Now that I research this stuff and learn a TON from y'all, I can do it the right way the first time.....
Just don't tell me I shouldn't use O'Reilly's brand fluids. It's all they carried for the ATF+4 and Dexron VI. It's API so that should be good enough, right?

Will be doing that, too. I suspect I (as in me) have not paid any attention to what I've put into it in the past. Also, had it flushed 2+ years ago and no clue what the shop put in it. I doubt they cared to use G05.

In the past I've always used that Prestone flush kit, which will get all of the old stuff out, but will leave the system filled with non-distilled water. I think with the hose off I got about 1/2 of the system drained. I just re-filled with distilled water a few times to "dilute" what was in the system then re-filled with the - G05 stuff.
Don't forget to take out the overflow/fill tank and clean it out too.
I got mine from O'Reilly's. They had to "special order" it. No extra charge.
I know it says to use distilled water but don't use it. My dad did some experiments and found tat it tries to gain minerals from whatever it comes in contact with. Where my ad works they have seen it eat through metal support cables.
