1998 2.5L 5spd Reg Cab, Worn out clutch or input splines, Other tranny??
I was driving home and someone was going UBER Slow, so I dumped the truck into 2nd to go around them, heard some grinding, though I missed the gear, went to reapply the gear, No Go.... I then tried all over gears, No Go... I was able to keep the truck going, by feathering the gas pedal, but if I touched it any harder than feathering it, it would grind and I wouldn't move..
I haven't taken it apart just yet, waiting for my driveway to be free'd up and my tools transferred from my shop to my house.
I was reading, and I called a guy, and I THINK I have an AX5 Transmission, but I am not 100% Sure, I am trying to find out if there is any other transmission options available if the splines on the input shaft are bad.. BECAUSE, the only 2 trannys I can find, one is $400, and the other is $200 but im gonna assume its got a problem, and hes just trying to get rid of it...

It's actually an AX-15, not the AX-5.
Grinding sounds more like the transmission but the slipping more like the clutch. Do you smell the clutch burning up?
4th gear is direct, 1:00 to 1 ratio, so basically the input/output shafts are locked together. If it won't move in that you might have a failed pressure plate.
Pull the transmission before you condemn it.

After talking with my brothers today, Im betting its something with the clutch, my dad seems to think the input shaft splines are stripped
so the 1998 Dodge Dakota Reg Cab 2.5L 5spd I own, has an AX-15?? you guys happen to have a Factory Service Manual download handy?? I am going to rebuild my 2.5 and put a new clutch kit, my engine has 165k and a blow-by I realized After getting the truck...
After I get it running again, im putting smaller tires on it and I need Fenders, A rear bumper, and I may do a bedliner paint job across the whole truck because the green paintjob is F'd up.
I quickly learned that these trucks are NOT Cheap and specifically the 2.5 model because its a jeep drivetrain in a Dakota frame..

It's not a Jeep drivetrain. The Jeep uses the AX-5. You also should have a corporate 8.25 rear, not a Dana.
There's a 2000 service manual download. It does have the 2.5 in it but not the AX-15. There were some differences in wiring but it uses the same style CCD bus for all the different module communications.
You can get it here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-download.html
It's not a pdf, yet. You have to use WinRar to convert it.

Not sure why but the clutch started slipping in 2008 with my 1998 2.5 clutch and had a new clutch installed
Yes an AX-15
sounds like trans not clutch
I don't think the PCM on a 1998 2.5L AX-15 knows what the AX-15 is doing at any time no wires no connections nothing to let the PCM know what gear the AX-15 is in at all.

Since I might be here a while doing this rebuild, figure I tell u guys a story on why this is gonna take me longer than usual.... One night I was in Orlando Screwin around the wrong side of town doin some things I wasn't supposed to be doing, and someone shot me point blank in my stomach, with a 9mm pistol, round nose bullet which is still lodged in my left rear cheek.. its been a few months but Certain movements are hard for me to do, so this wont be as quick as I hope, sucks to be immobile and have to ask others for a ride.....
IS there any suggestions you guys have about Lightening the Dakota?? I was thinking about gutting it out, but then to resell it, that wouldn't go over so well.... I just don't like how the truck weighs over 3k lbs, I notice Dodge put TOO much unnecessary metal and extra stuff that doesnt really affect the structure strength of the truck..
I may buy a 4x4 quad cab... I didn't like dodge too much because we had bad luck with a 2004 ram 2500 cummins as well... but after looking at online reviews the Dakota seems to the be truck of choice by someone not wanting a FULL size truck...
