So I pulled the cover off today, everything looked good except this one spot:

Is this any major cause for concern? I've come to know that shiny spots are not good. The actual teeth of the chain seem fine, it just looks like something scraped this part here... very few metal shavings but I thought I'd check just to make sure:

Hard to see any unusual shiny spot. I do see clean metal under flaking off sludge deposits, tho. I don't think I'd worry about it. (and I'm a habitual worrier!)

Yeah I've decided its fine. I also noticed there are tiny hairline cracks inside the cover but I found thats normal for aluminum.

The plan is to get the cover and water pump on tonight so the engine can go in tomorrow.

That is unless I run into more problems lol

So did you just tear down your blown motor, or get the newer one machined?

Neither. I was adding my old water pump to the used engine I picked up but I also wanted to see the condition of the chain so I pulled the timing cover too.

Timing cover, waterpump, harmonic balancer, and a POR15'd oil pan is done.

Engine is going in tomorrow. I'll post some pics then.

POR15 in the oil pan? Why?

Hope the install is going okay, btw. Getting everything lined up ain't as easy as it looks on TV, is it? Guide pins (long bolts with the heads cut off) can be your friend.

I thought you bent the rods in your old motor when you hydrolocked it? So you just changed water pumps and that's it?

He was given a replacement motor, but it ended up having rust seized pistons, so then he bought a junkyard motor with a 6 month guarantee or some such thing. He transferred his almost new water pump to the junkyard lump.
