Radiator fan cut out whilst hunting parking spots. Check gages came on, look over, digital readout is at 255F. Shut if off immediately. Its down to 240 now.

100 amp fuse is good, relay is presumably good. Connected fan straight to battery, no lightning bolt and no fan. Either the ford connector melted, or the fan windings came apart. Going to tow home and get our leakdown/conlression gauge out and see how bad I hurt it.

got it towed home- no charge thanks to geico. Already pulled the lincoln fan off and put the old mechanical fan on (I kept it for this reason). Even sans shroud, should be more than nothing til I get another lincoln fan.

Dad says it should be fine, but I'll run a compression test tomorrow anyways.

Also noticed I have a 20 pound cap. 20psi water is a 260 boiling point, 50/50 is a 275 boiling point. It's highly possible that the hotspots in back of the head may have got very close to the number, especially once I cut the engine off, and there was no water flow (this is why racecars run electric water pumps!). I pulled the cap off when I got home, and the water level was to the very top of the hose, so volumetrically, I don't think I lost any to steam, but it's hard to say.

255 is hot. As long as there was coolant circulating though you should be OK.

it was circulating until I shut the motor off. motor off = water pump not pumping = stagnant water = ????

This is why race cars use an electric water pump, to circulate water with the engine off.

The 20psi rad cap gives me hope.

just ordered a new motor, made by Standard Motor Drive (OEM producer). $90 plus UPS shipping, $102 total. The old one is riveted in, I'll just cut the rivets out and bolt new one in. Figure the brushes gave way, so getting a brand new one is worth it.

I doubt you did any damage. Yes, when you turn it off, the water stops circulating. But the engine also stops producing heat at that point, so it really shouldn't get much hotter after you shut it off.

I ran an electric water pump and fan on my race car so it would cool down between rounds (it was usually about 240 at the end of a run), but also because it liked to toss the belts at 7000RPM.

we run a mezeire electric. I'd be leary of an electric on the street, though. On a BBC, one could theoretically machine a bridge behind the belt-drive pump that would have barbs to attach a remote electric pump, for an either/or operation. But with our water pumps built into the timing cover, couldn't do it.

I stand corrected, they do exist, albeit by a crappy company. CSR # 903MAG

now this is funy.

meziere makes a backing plate, but i dont see a water pump listed.

EDIT- nevermind. It's an LA block cover, not Magnum.

don't nevermind. Here's the 91-up blockoff plate-

http://www.jegs.com/i/Meziere/680/WP...d=#moreDetails

and water pump-

http://www.jegs.com/i/Meziere/680/WP...rentProductId=

edit- no wait, nevermind again. It was 91-up non-magnum. How many times did the timing cover change?!?!?!
