Default trans slipping

I have a 98 5.2l dakota(219,000 miles and i think stock trans) and was wondering if something could be causing it to slip or the fact that its just old. I've only noticed it when cruising and like when it is overdrive. It was happening when i was cruising at 30 today(first time for that usually its around 60) but its just the rpms jump a little(about 500 max) and the it catches and you can feel it jump when it catches. Sometimes it will throw you back in your seat and sometimes you can barley feel it.

It does leak(i think at the main seal) but it always starts to slip and act funny when i actually check the fluid and put some in it. If i just leave it and drive it, it doesn't happen as much.

Last thing is i have a wire at the bottom of the trans(not sure which side) but i know the wires are showing and didn't know if that could have anything to do with it

Well I never had that problem that but I pulled my auto out and putting in a manual.... But I still have the auto out of my truck it's a 97 it'll bolt up and work but the trans is going to need the transfer case because I needed it for my manual because that transfer case was busted.... A 231d transfer case will bolt up to it because that's the one I took off of it, but I would try and tape the wires up so there not shorting or grounding out, do you have any codes?

Slipping and leaking. . .

Karnaks says. . . you need to take it to a transmission shop and be prepared to give them all your money--it need a rebuild.

if this is happening at mostly cruising speed, then it sounds like your lockup is going out in the torque converter...

This thread might be helpful: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ml#post3052076

Do you have auto shop class at your h/s? Or in your school district? Use to be, when I was a kid, the teachers for those classes were pretty good mechanics as well.

Do you have an after school job--have you thought of looking for a job as a helper at a local transmission shop? I did that for a Ford dealership for a while in college. Didn't pay much, but I had the run of the shop on Saturday afternoons when they were closed.

Yeah i actually have two and am trying to save. I can probably get enough over the summer to do it which is my plan. And next year in high school i will hopefully be taking a automotive class at the community college like that.

Is it jumping exactly 500 consistently? If so, I think you are losing your torque convertor lockup clutch.
